ANNAPOLIS, Md. â€"â€" The Navy men's tennis team ran its winning streak to four matches by posting victories over the University of the Sciences and Mount St. Mary's Saturday at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis. The Mids defeated the Devils by the score of 6-1 and the Mountaineers by the count of 4-3.
Navy quickly secured the doubles point against Sciences (1-2) by losing just four games in sweeping the three matches. The Mids then won five of the six singles matches in straight sets to come away with the victory in the inaugural meeting between the programs.
The match between the Mids (6-5) and the Mountaineers (3-2) was a much closer one. Navy earned the doubles point with victories at the Nos. 2 and 3 flights. The tandem of Walker Sims (So., Memphis, Tenn.) and Tyler Tossavainen (Jr., Fleming Island, Fla.) initially won a 6-1 decision at No. 2, with Parker Hayslett (Fr., Clearwater, Fla.) and Joshua Martin (So., Foley, Ala.) soon recording a 6-4 win to give the nod to the Mids.
Navy quickly expanded its lead to 3-0 when Cameron Kirkpatrick (Fr., Menlo Park, Calif.) won a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 6 singles and Andrey Majkic (So., Jacksonville, Fla.) posted a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 3. However, the Mountaineers won the next three matches to be completed to tie the overall match at 3-3. The Mids would go on to win the remaining available point and the match when Aries Wong (So., Bethesda, Md.) rallied after losing the first set to defeat Mateo DeSomocurcio, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5, at the No. 1 flight. The players were knotted at 5-5 in the final set.
"After securing the doubles point," said Navy head coach Chris Garner, "Andrey and Cameron came out strong in singles play to help the team build to a 3-0 lead. Cameron had a very impressive day, securing two singles points alongside a doubles win.
"Although the team had a comfortable lead being up 3-0, Mount St. Mary's looked as if they could make a clean sweep of the four remaining matches left on court. Having lost the first set, Aries began to work his way back into the match by winning the second set handily. Both Aries and Mateo came up with some incredible shots down the stretch and seemed to bring out the best in one another. With the final set tied at 5-5 and matches tied 3-3, it was a real exciting atmosphere. Aries dictated play the final two games to take the match and give the team a hard fought 4-3 victory.
Navy will be back in the Tose Family Tennis Center Saturday for a trio of matches. The Mids will play host to Richmond at 10 a.m., Rider at 2 p.m. and Coppin State at 5 p.m.
