ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's tennis team (7-2) was able to sweep a pair of home matches on Saturday with a 5-2 win over Longwood (0-1) and a 4-3 victory over George Mason (3-2) at the Tose Family Tennis Center at the Brigade Sports Complex.
"Longwood came out and played really well in doubles," said assistant coach Ale Pedergnana. "We did a really good job of coming back in singles and fighting for points."
In doubles, Longwood was able to grab two wins in order to come away with the doubles point. Navy's No. 3 duo of freshman Sabrina Jiang and sophomore Claudia Mackenzie took away the lone win in doubles for the Mids with a hard-fought 7-6 (14-12) win over Paloma Alatorre and Maria Coronel.
The Mids rallied after dropping the doubles point to take five of six matches in singles. Navy was able to win Nos. 1, 4, 5, and 6 single in straight sets. Senior Katie Porter had the closest contest in the match with a 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (11-9) score to win the match narrowly over Longwood's Isis Gill.
In Navy's 4-3 win over George Mason, the Mids again surrendered the doubles point. The No. 3 doubles pairing of junior Audrey Channell and freshman Anastasia Kondrasov took away the only doubles win for the Mids with a 6-4 victory over Olivia Lacy-Thompson and Esu Erdenebat.
"We lost the doubles point again in the George Mason match and had to turn to our singles," said Pedergnana. "We had to grit this one out and we have to do a better job of limiting our unforced errors."
In singles, the Mids were able to win four matches in a row to make the overall score 4-1 at the time to secure the team win. Kondrasov was able to win in straight sets while only dropping two games to George Mason's Olivia Lacy-Thompson. Sophomore Amanda Keller grabbed the victory in straight sets at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Brittany Pilkington.
Navy plays host again tomorrow when they take on James Madison at the Tose Family Tennis Center at the Brigade Sports Complex at 9:00 am.
