ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The James Madison women's tennis team (3-2) defeated host Navy (7-3, 0-1 PL), 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Tose Family Tennis Center. Navy finishes the weekend with a 2-1 mark after defeating Longwood and George Mason on Saturday.
"It was a tough match for us today," said head coach Keith Puryear. "James Madison played very solid ball. I thought we competed fairly well but we didn't do enough to get the win. We really needed to cut down on some of the errors that we committed and that was the main difference in the match."
James Madison swept the three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead in the match. Navy junior Audrey Channell and freshman Anastasia Kondrasov battled at No. 3 doubles against Rachel Nelson and Emma Petersen before falling in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-5).
The visiting Dukes then swept all six singles matches for the 7-0 final score.
Navy senior Katie Porter was the lone Mid to win her first set as she fell in a three-set battle at No. 5 singles to Rebecca Harris, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Sophomore Kristine Rojo forced a third-set tiebreak at No. 2 singles against Nelson (7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-1)) and sophomore Claudia Mackenzie did the same at No. 3 singles against Abby Amos (6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5)).
Navy fell in straight sets in the three other singles matches.
James Madison improves to 3-1 against Navy in the all-time series.
Navy will next host Richmond on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 11:00 AM.
