ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins (1-0, 0-0 Big Ten) took advantage of its sixth extra-man opportunity of the night, as second-year attackman Shack Stanwick punched in the game-winner 39 seconds into the second overtime period to lead the Blue Jays to a 12-11 victory over the 18th-ranked Navy men's lacrosse team (1-1, 0-0 Patriot League) Tuesday evening at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. It marked the seventh time in the last 13 meetings the game was decided by a goal and just the fifth time in 90 meetings it was won in overtime.

"It was a hard-fought game by both teams and the fans got a real treat tonight," said fifth-year Navy head coach Rick Sowell. "I'm really proud of my guys and their effort, but at the end of the day you have to tip your hat to Johns Hopkins for making that last play to win the game."

"We've had major struggles down here for 30 years. It's always been a challenging place to play," said Johns Hopkins head coach Dave Pietramala. "I've got news for you, that's a really good Navy team. They are really good in goal which he showed late in the game. They have an aggressive defense with two dynamic poles and their offense is improved. Hats off to Coach Sowell and the team, they're gonna give some teams trouble this season."

The Midshipmen found themselves down by three goals on three different occasions and trailed by two with just over six minutes to go in regulation after the Blue Jays tallied back-to-back goals in 36 seconds.

Navy, though, chipped away at Hopkins' lead when Kevin Wendel (Sr./M/East Islip, N.Y.) sent his pass across the field to Jack Ray (So./A/Wyckoff, N.J.) who went high to high against Blue Jays keeper Brock Tumbaugh. Both teams had good looks at the goal as time was winding down before Navy sophomore Casey Rees (Sykesville, Md.) took a Wendel pass and drilled it from 10 yards out to send the game into overtime.

The Midshipmen would begin the first overtime period a man down after All-American close defenseman Chris Fennell (Milford, N.J.) was whistled for unnecessary roughness with just 0.2 left in regulation. Navy withstood the man-down situation against the Blue Jays who put back-to-back shots on goal against Navy keeper John Connors (Sr./Bellmore, N.Y.) and he turned both shots aside.

Navy had the ball with just over a minute to go in the game when it was hit with a stall warning. The Mids called a timeout but once play resumed, they were unable to put a shot on goal and turned the ball over to Hopkins with 38.3 seconds remaining. With under five seconds to play, a scrum ensued in front of the cage where long pole Matt Rees (Jr./Sykesville, Md.) would be flagged for unnecessary roughness.

Hopkins opened the second overtime period once again with a man advantage, and while it had converted on just two of its previous five EMOs, the Blue Jays replicated an earlier set piece on the opposite side of the cage with junior midde John Crawley finding Stanwick for the game-winner.

The Blue Jays jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and owned a 4-2 advantage at the end of the first quarter. They pushed their lead to three a second time (5-2) early in the second before Navy answered with back-to-back goals by Matt Rees and Wendel. Hopkins scored the final goal of the half to take a 6-4 lead into the locker room and came back out and executed on an extra-man goal to take another three-goal advantage at 7-4.

Navy, though, got a lift from rookie midfielder Greyson Torain (Glen Burnie, Md.) who sparked a three goal-run by the Mids and featured a spectacular goal by Torain to open the fourth frame and tie the game for the first time at 7-7.

The two teams traded goals over the next two minutes before Holden Cattoni (Sr./M) and Ryan Brown (Sr./A) scored back-to-back goals in 36 seconds to give the Blue Jays an 11-9 advantage with 6:19 to go.

Wendel led the way for the Mids with a career-best four-point (2G, 2A) performance, while Ray notched his fourth career hat trick with three. Senior co-captain Patrick Keena (Vienna, Va.) scored a pair of goals and dealt out an assist, while Torain continues to emerge as a go-to player for Navy. Matt Rees, meanwhile, contributed his first career points with a goal and an assist.

Connors finished the game with 10 saves, while Brady Dove (Jr./Stevensville, Md.) won 10 of the 23 draws he took and Joe Varello (So./Kings Park, N.Y.) was 0 for 1.

Brown was nearly unstoppable, scoring a game-high six goals on 15 shots for Hopkins, including two-extra-man strikes. Crawley pitched in two goals and an assist, while Stanwick was credited with a goal and three assists. Turnbaugh made 13 saves in his first career game in goal, while senior Craig Madarasz won 14 of the 24 faceoffs he took.

The Mids will play their third game in eight days when they make the 40-minute trip to College Park to battle fourth-ranked Maryland on Saturday. Action is set for 1:00 pm at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium. The contest will be streamed live via the Big Ten Network (btn2go.com), while Joe Miller will have the call on 1430 AM / 99.9 FM WNAV.
