LONGWOOD, Fla. - The Navy men's golf team closed out action at the Legacy Intercollegiate played at The Legacy Club at Alaqua Lakes in Florida on Tuesday with a 54-hole mark of 894 (+30) to place fourth among the field of 14 teams in what was the Mids' spring opener. Navy finished 5 strokes out of third and 7 strokes out of second, as Wofford took the team title with a 5-under par 859.
With two rounds of action played on Monday, the entire field held its position over the final 18 holes on Tuesday with the exception of the host, Stetson University, who pulled even with Florida Gulf Coast in fifth. Navy owned a 3-stroke advantage over Florida Gulf Coast heading into the final round and distanced itself by another stroke after posting a 17-over par 305 on Tuesday. The Mids cut into the 7-stroke deficit to Keiser, but it would not be enough to move up in the final standings.
"The course played a bit tougher today with windier conditions and tougher hole locations, but the boys managed to maintain the firth position," said Navy head coach Pat Owen. "Overall, it was a good team performance!"
Navy was paced by sophomore Thomas Fricke (Haymarket, Va.), who jumped from 13th to sixth in the final standings after shooting par on the final day. He finished the tournament 2-over (74-72-72). Fricke came within an inch of making a hole-in-one on the 12th hole, a 186-yard par-3, of Tuesday's finale.
Meanwhile, freshman Griffin Peters (Fountain Hills, Ariz.) just missed a top-10 finish with his 5-over par 221 (72-72-77). Peters entered the final day in sixth, but slid back after turning in a 5-over par 77 over the final 18 holes.
Junior Connor Tallman (Lake Oswego, Ore.) had a strong opening day where he stood ninth after shooting 1-over. Tuesday's final round gave him fits, as he was 12-over for the day and 13-over for the tournament, placing 34th with a 229 (73-72-84). A stroke behind Tallman was senior team captain David Won (Bothell, Wash.) who pushed up from 43rd to finish 39th with a 231 (75-79-77). Won played his last six holes of the day with an impressive 2-under.
Rounding things out for the Mids was junior Devin Terry (La Crosse, Wis.), who placed 62nd with a 24-over par 240 (75-86-79).
Navy will return to the links in two weeks when it returns to the state of Florida to take part in the Patriot Spring Invitational on March 14-15.
