ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's tennis team (12-5, 0-1 PL) won its fifth straight match by edging Seton Hall (5-5), 4-3, on Saturday at the Tose Family Tennis Center.
Navy won the critical doubles point before the Mids and the Pirates split the six singles matches.
"It was another tough one today," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "We kept clawing and scratching and we found a way to win. That was the theme of the day."
Sophomore Claudia Mackenzie and freshman Catalina Rico defeated Julia Keenan and Katie Kim at No. 2 doubles, 6-4, and junior Rozel Hernandez and freshman Josie Rogers beat Thandy Kangwa and Anicka Fajnorova at No. 3 doubles, 7-5, to give Navy the early 1-0 lead.
"The doubles matches were well-played by both teams," said Puryear. "Winning the doubles point was really clutch for us today."
Senior Sam Droop picked up a straight set win over Keenan at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-4 and senior Katie Porter defeated Fajnorova at No. 3 singles, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) to put Navy ahead at 3-1.
After a Seton Hall win at No. 1 singles cut Navy's lead to 3-2, junior Audrey Channell finished off a comeback win at No. 6 singles over Kim, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 to put Navy ahead at 4-2 and clinch the team win. Seton Hall then won at No. 2 singles for the 4-3 final score.
Navy improves to 6-1 all-time against Seton Hall and this was the sixth match that was decided by a 4-3 score.
