ELON, N.C. â€"â€" Elon won a trio of straight-set singles matches and one three-set match to record a 4-2 victory over the Navy men's tennis team Monday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center in Elon, N.C. The defeat ended a five-match winning streak for the Mids (11-7), while the Phoenix (9-4) have now won seven of their last eight matches.
The singles matches were contested first due to the expected arrival of poor weather in the area, and with the overall match result already determined by the outcome of the singles matches the teams did not play the doubles matches. The singles portion of the contest took nearly three and a half hours to be completed.
It also marked the first time this season Navy had played a match outdoors.
"I thought the guys handled the weather well," said Navy head coach Chris Garner. "It was hot and humid, for us, but they became accustomed to it. They have put in a lot of work both on and off the court to help them for this."
Elon took a 1-0 lead when Robert Lindgren posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over Krishna Jana (Jr., Seabrook, Texas) at No. 3 singles. Navy evened the proceedings when Austin Jones (Sr., Dallas, Texas) won a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Mario Paccini at No. 1 singles.
"Austin had a good win," said Garner. "He played a good all-around game and made his opponent uncomfortable in the match."
The Phoenix won the ensuing two matches to be completed to build a 3-1 advantage. Chris Humphreys recorded a 6-4, 6-4 win over Andrey Majkic (So., Jacksonville, Fla.) at No. 6 singles, then Felipe Sarrasague defeated Thomas Pecor (Jr., Houston, Texas) by the score of 7-5, 6-2 in their No. 2 singles match.
The Phoenix clinched the overall match decision when Salvador Miljares rallied to defeat Aries Wong (So., Bethesda, Md.), 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4 singles. The sixth and final match saw Navy's Walker Sims (So., Memphis, Tenn.) defeat Charlie Sullivan, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, at No. 5 singles.
"Both Walker and Aries really battled out there," said Garner. "Walker and Charlie had quite the match. There was a lot of aggressive tennis played out there, and it was exciting to see Walker close out the match. Aries just couldn't get all the way back in the third set.
"We were right there in the matches we lost. A couple of points here and there could have swung the outcome in our direction."
Navy's next match will be Wednesday at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C.
