Women's Tennis Drops Two Matches in Puerto Rico

March 15, 2016

PALMAS DEL MAR, Puerto Rico – The Navy women's tennis team (12-7, 0-1 PL) dropped two matches on its spring break trip in Puerto Rico on Tuesday. Navy fell to #3 North Carolina (16-2, 5-0 ACC), 7-0, and Armstrong State (11-1), 7-0. Navy had its five-match winning streak snapped on Tuesday.

"Both of our opponents were very solid today," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "UNC is a national championship-level team and Armstrong State has won numerous national championships at the Division II level."

Navy pushed North Carolina to a third-set tiebreak at both No. 2 and No. 6 singles.

North Carolina's Marika Akkerman outlasted Navy's Claudia Mackenzie at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4) and Maggie Kane bested Navy's Catalina Rico at No. 6 singles, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8).

North Carolina's Whitney Kay, the 29th-ranked singles player in the NCAA, defeated sophomore Amanda Keller at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2.

Freshman Carlee Conway fell to Chloe Oullet-Pizer at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-2. The loss snapped Conway's school record-tying 13-match singles winning streak.

Freshman Josie Rogers had her 10-match singles winning streak snapped at No. 4 singles to Ashley Dai, 6-2, 6-0.

The third-ranked Tar Heels are the highest ranked opponent that Navy has faced in program history.

Navy also dropped a 7-0 decision to Division II Armstrong State on Tuesday.

Armstrong State is the nation's top-ranked team at the Division II level and the Pirates are the reigning national champions. Armstrong State also has wins this season over Division I members George Mason, LIU Brooklyn, Nicholls State and Jacksonville State.

Freshmen Sabrina Jiang and Kellyn Abbanat both forced third-set 10-point tiebreakers against Armstrong State.

Jiang fell to Lena Pacholski at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5) and Abbanat fell to Alice Patch at No. 6 singles, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7).

Navy was swept in the doubles point by both North Carolina and Armstrong State.

"We had some opportunities in both matches and at this level of competition you really have to capitalize on them and we weren't able to do that," said Puryear. "We do have some takeaways from today and it was a great learning experience for us to get better going forward."

Navy will play two matches in Puerto Rico against Division III Denison tomorrow beginning at 9:00 AM.
