Mids Close NCAA Swimming & Diving Championship

March 26, 2016

ATLANTA, Ga. â€"â€" Navy's Tom Duvall (Sr., Durham, N.H.) and Joe Kaszubowski (Fr., Whitefish Bay, Wis.) closed out their respective slate of events at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championship Saturday at the McAuley Aquatics Center in Atlanta, Ga. Duvall placed 47th in the 100 freestyle and Kaszubowski placed 45th in platform diving on the final day of the three-day meet.

Duvall, who was competing in the second NCAA Championship of his career, posted a time of 44.69 in Saturday's trial heats of the 100 free. He previously finished in 51st place in the 500 free on Thursday and in 42nd place in Friday's 200 free.

"As I stated earlier this week," said Navy men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts, "the goal is to compete at the highest level while representing the program, the athletic department and the Naval Academy to the best of our potential. On the swimming side, we came up short in this regard which is disappointing. Looking at the positive, we remain extremely honored to be at the NCAAs. We are proud to have earned the right to be at this amazing meet and never want to take that for granted. In Tom's case, he can look back and be proud that he got to the meet on two occasions and earned All-America honors in 2014."

Kaszubowski totaled 259.10 points in Saturday's platform event, his lone competition of the championship. He is Navy's first diver to advance to the NCAA Championship in five years and the program's first freshman diver to qualify for the meet since 2004.

"Although I don't think Joe was very happy with his score and placing," said Navy diving coach Rich MacDonald, "I was proud of the way he dove today. He started off slow, but showed a lot of mental toughness and character to finish the meet strong. His best three dives were the last three he took. Just to get here as a freshman is pretty spectacular. I think he will gain a lot of experience from being at this meet and hopefully we will be back again next year."
