Box Score

DOVER, Del. - The Navy baseball team earned a 16-4 road victory over Delaware State on Wednesday at Soldier Field. The Mids (26-9-1) were able to score two runs or more in six different innings and eight of nine Navy starters scored runs against the host Hornets (6-26).

"We had another good offensive attack with 16 runs and 17 hits," remarked head coach Paul Kostacopoulos. "Robert Currie, Connor Deneen and Sean Trent really were swinging it well and helped to generate a lot of our offense. Though throughout our lineup we got contributions so that was good to see."

Navy was led at the plate offensively by Currie (Sr., Atlanta, Ga.), Deneen (Tustin, Calif.), and Trent (Sr., Sorrento, Fla.). Currie provided a 3-for-4 outing with three hits, two runs, and three RBIs while also being walked twice. Deneen went 2-for-4 with one of two Navy home runs on the day. Trent provided the other home run while going 3-for-6 with three RBIs.

The Mids sent six pitchers to the mound against the Hornets on Wednesday with Colin Brady (So., Seneca, S.C.) getting the start. Brady allowed only two hits and no runs in his 3.1-inning injury-shortened outing. Navy's bullpen in the form of Andrew Sauer (Fr., Johns Creek, Ga.), Andrew Bartek (Sr., Jefferson, Ga.), Jett Meenach (Jr., Flower Mound, Texas), J.P. Colton (Fr., Maitland, Fla.), and Sam Sorenson (Sr., Etters, Pa.) would go on to allow five hits and two earned runs to secure the win for Brady over the next 5.2 innings.

"Colin (Brady) had a solid start and got the win," said Kostacopoulos. "He took a line drive to the leg in the fourth to shorten his start, so that was unfortunate but he was doing a good job through up to that point."

Navy jumped out to a fast start against the Hornets' starting pitcher Cole Davis by posting three runs in the top of the first inning. Currie started off the game with a double down the left field line after facing a full count. He would then score three batters later off of a Stephen Born (So., Strafford, Pa.) single to right field. In the next at bat, Trent plated Born on a two-run home run to right-center field.

The Mids extended their lead to 5-0 in the second inning with a two-run double from Currie, who drove in Matthew Wilcox (Fr., Los Gatos, Calif.), who doubled earlier in the inning, and Travis Blue (Jr., Orange, Calif.), who reached on a fielding error.

In the top of the fourth, Navy continued the scoring trend by posting three more runs, highlighted by a Blue triple with one out followed by a single by Currie to score the frame's first run. Deneen capped the scoring with the Mids' second two-run homer of the day.

Up 8-0, Navy posted two more runs in the fifth inning behind a RBI double by Logan Knowles (So., Port Orchard, Wash.), who would score later via walk.

Over the fifth and sixth innings, Delaware State recorded four unanswered runs to break the cold streak and draw the score to a 10-4 margin.

The Mids stifled the Hornets the rest of the way while posting six more runs. In the top of the seventh, Navy scored three runs from a combination of a Trent RBI single, a bases loaded hit by pitch of Wilcox and a bases loaded walk to Knowles.

The eighth and ninth innings provided three more Navy runs to cap off the 16-4 victory. In the eighth, Born tallied the RBI on a groundout to score Andrew Lowry (Fr., El Cajon, Calif.), who entered the game as a pinch runner. The ninth inning had two Navy runs come across as Hayden Spalding (So., Franklin, Va.), who entered as a pinch hitter, and Blue scored on RBI singles from Lowry and Adrian Chinnery (Jr., Wilmington, Del.), respectively.

Sorenson finished the game on the mound for the Mids with two strikeouts in the bottom of ninth inning.

Navy outhit Delaware State 17-7 in the 16-4 win. Currie (3), Trent (3), Deneen (2), Born (2), and Knowles (2) each had multi-hit games for the Mids. All nine of Navy's starters provided a hit to the winning effort, while eight of nine scored a run. Lowry and Spalding each scored a run off the bench for the visiting squad.

Brady was given the win in his 3.1-inning, two-hit start. With the win he improved to 3-0 on the season. As a staff, Navy's pitchers allowed just two earned runs in the game and struck out five Hornet batters.

The Mids now return back to Patriot League play when they host Lehigh in a weekend four-game series on Saturday and Sunday at Max Bishop Stadium. The first pitch on both days is scheduled for 12 pm.
