Women's Tennis Beats Bucknell, 7-0

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's tennis team (18-9, 4-2 PL) blanked visiting Bucknell (13-7, 4-2 PL), 7-0, on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at the U.S. Naval Academy's varsity tennis courts. The win sends Navy to next week's Patriot League Tournament on a three-match winning streak.

Navy swept a tightly contested doubles point, 3-0, and won all six singles matches to win its ninth straight match against Bucknell.

Junior Rozel Hernandez and freshman Catalina Rico defeated Lauren Fishbein and Lisa Jouravleva at No. 2 doubles, 6-4, and sophomores Amanda Keller and Claudia Mackenzie clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 win over Maria Cioffi and Michele Urbinati at No. 1 doubles.

Junior Audrey Channell and sophomore Kristine Rojo finished the doubles sweep with a 7-6 (7-5) win at No. 3 doubles over Stephanie Pino and Emilie Bush.

Keller and Mackenzie won their second matches of the day in singles competition as both won in straight sets. Keller beat Cioffi at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-2, and Mackenzie defeated Fishbein at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-1. Cioffi was named to the all-league first team in 2015.

All three of Navy's seniors earned singles wins on Senior Day. Senior captain Logan Antill bested Jouravleva at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), senior Sam Droop beat Urbinati at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-3, and senior Katie Porter downed Pino at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-3.

Freshman Josie Rogers also knocked off Madeline Melch at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-4.

Rogers improves to 22-5 on the season while Keller is now 22-15 in singles play.

"Bucknell is a very good and well-coached team and they came in on a hot streak," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "For us to come in and play the way we did and win it 7-0 is a testament to our team. This match and the Loyola match were critical matches for us to win. I liked how we handled ourselves today. We went out and played with poise and passion. We played smart, tenacious tennis."

Navy will host the 2016 Patriot League Tournament from April 21-24. The Patriot League Tournament First Round matchup between the #8 and #9 seeds will be played Thursday, April 21, followed by four quarterfinal matches on Friday, April 22. The semifinals will be contested on Saturday and the tournament will conclude with the championship match on Sunday afternoon.

The Patriot League Tournament Champion will earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
