ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Boston University women's tennis team (12-8) won its third straight Patriot League Championship by defeating host Navy (20-10), 4-1, on Sunday at the Fluegel-Moore Tennis Stadium. Boston University earns the Patriot League's automatic berth to the NCAA Championship.
"I thought we were in the match at every single court," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "It just really came down to a few points here and there. I give credit to Boston. They have done a great job of really separating themselves from the rest of the pack. I wish them the best of luck in the NCAAs."
Navy sophomore Claudia Mackenzie was the lone Mid to earn a singles victory against Boston. Mackenzie defeated Iryna Kostirko at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-1.
Mackenzie was 3-0 in singles play at the Patriot League Tournament this weekend and she also clinched Navy's 4-1 win over Army West Point in the semifinals on Saturday.
Boston University won the doubles point against Navy by picking up wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Kostriko and Barbara Rodriguez first defeated Navy's Rozel Hernandez and Catalina Rico at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, and then Johanna Hyoty and Sabrina Faybyshev clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win at the No. 1 position over Mackenzie and Amanda Keller.
Navy's Carlee Conway and Kristine Rojo were leading Lauren Davis and Remi Ramos, 5-3, at No. 3 doubles and were serving for match point when Boston U. clinched the doubles win and the No. 3 match went unfinished.
Faybyshev defeated Sam Droop at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-1, before Mackenzie's win at No. 3 singles cut Boston's lead to 2-1.
The Terriers then won at No. 6 singles with Ramos besting Josie Rogers, 6-3, 6-4, and then Rodriguez clinched the championship with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Conway at No. 5 singles.
The matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles went unfinished after Boston clinched the win at 4-1.
Keller (24-15) and Rogers (24-6) finish the season tied for the team lead in singles wins with 24. The 24 wins are also tied for the third-most in a single season at Navy. Additionally, Rogers' single season winning percentage of .800 is a new program record.
Boston takes a 3-0 lead against Navy in the all-time series and the Terriers have defeated the Mids in the Patriot League Championship match in each of the last two seasons.
Boston's Faybyshev was named the Patriot League Tournament's John "Pat" Tooney Most Valuable Player.
Navy's seventh season of intercollegiate varsity women's tennis comes to a close with Navy making its fifth appearance in the Patriot League Championship match and Navy won at least 20 dual matches for the sixth straight season.
"I was really proud of the way the team handled themselves, the way they represented the Academy and the way they came to compete every single match," said Puryear. "This was the toughest schedule we ever had and I think that helped us down the line as we continued to improve and challenge ourselves. The culmination of that was making it to the Patriot League finals again and that says a lot because the competition in our conference has gotten better every single year.
"We will miss our seniors and I want to thank all three of them, captain Logan Antill, Sam Droop and Katie Porter, for what they've brought to the program."
