SUNSET, S.C. - Playing against one of the toughest fields in recent memory, the Navy men's golf team finished 12th at the Clemson Invitational held at the par-72 Cliffs at Keowee Falls in Sunset, S.C. The Mids put together rounds of 317-318-318 to finish the 54-hole tournament 30-over (953).

A Jack Nicklaus course, The Cliffs require both distance and accuracy, as well as precision putting. It allowed for slim to no margin of error around the greens. The teams battled wind gusts of 30 miles per hour and in Saturday's second round, the greens rolling at a Stimp Meter reading of 13.

Eleventh-ranked Clemson, who had not hosted a tournament since 1987, won the event as the lone team to shoot under par. The Tigers finished the tournament with a 3-under par 861, while #47 Georgia Tech and Louisville tied for second place with an 8-over par 872. Winthrop was 20-over and #41 Michigan State was 23-over to round out the top five.

Georgia Tech's Vince Whaley, who was unranked, took medalist honors with an 8-under par 208 (70-67-71). He beat out five players entered in the tournament ranked among the top 100, including Clemson's Stephen Behr who came in as the highest ranked individual at #42. Behr tied for third with a 1-under par 215.

Just four strokes separated Navy's five golfers as sophomore Thomas Fricke (Haymarket, Va.) led the way with a 22-over par 238 (79-79-80) and placed 55nd. Freshman Matthew Starobin (Davidsonville, Md.) placed 59th and was a stroke behind Fricke. After turning in an 11-over par 83 in the opening round, Starobin shot back-to-back 78s which were the lowest marks of the tournament by a Navy player.

Placing 60th, junior Connor Tallman (Lake Oswego, Ore.) shot a 78 in the opening round, but followed up with an 83 and a 79 to finish 24-over (240). Sophomore Ethan Mead (So./Charlotte, N.C.) fell in at 61st with a 25-over par 241 (81-79-81) and rookie Griffin Peters (Fountain Hills, Ariz.) placed 62nd with a 26-over par 242 (79-82-81).

The Mids will be back in action on Monday, April 18 when they play in the Finegan Invitational in Gladwyne, Pa.
