Bucknell Invitational Final Results
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Led by senior Devin Terry's (La Crosse, Wis.) 3-over par 143, the Navy men's golf team opened the 2016 fall campaign with a sixth-place finish at the Bucknell Invitational. The Mids, who shot the lowest team score of the final round (+4, 284), turned in a 23-over par 583 (299-284) for the weekend and were just 2 shots out of fifth place.
The Mids struggled to manage the course in Saturday's opening round, finishing the day 19-over and in 11th place among the 15-team field. Navy bounced back nicely on Sunday by turning in the lowest round of the day and the second-lowest of the two-day tournament with its 4-over par 284 to make the jump to sixth.
"This is the type of course that really requires a good bit of local knowledge," said 27th-year Navy head coach Pat Owen. "I was proud of the way we were able to bounce back today and shoot the low round. It seemed like everything clicked today and our depth played in our favor."
Terry, who stood 1-over after the opening round, led the Mids with a steady 3-over par 143 for the weekend to tie for ninth. Meanwhile, freshman Thomas Garbee (Asheville, N.C.) and junior Thomas Fricke (Haymarket, Va.) turned their game around after struggling over the first 18 holes. Garbee shot a 6-over 76 on Saturday and came back to post a 1-under par 69 in the final round to finish 5-over (76-69=145) and tied for 16th. Fricke, who owned the Mids' low stroke average a year ago, shot an 8-over 78 in the opener before coming back to shoot par on Sunday and tie for 23rd (78-70=148). Sophomore Griffin Peters (Fountain Hills, Ariz.) also finished 23rd with an 8-over par 148 (75-73), while senior team captain Connor Tallman (Lake Oswego, Ore.) finished 45th (77-75=152).
Navy also fielded a second team that finished 11th with a 49-over par 609. Junior Eric Terminello (White Plains, N.Y.) led the way for the Navy Gold squad with a 9-over par 149 (76-73) to tie for 28th. Rounding out the scores for the Mids were sophomore Gregory Sibick (Williamsville, N.Y.) in 36th (75-76=151), sophomore Paul Mauer (Eagleville, Pa.) in 53rd (71-82=153), sophomore Matthew Starobin (Davidsonville, Md.) in 63rd (73-83=156) and junior Ethan Mead (Charlotte, N.C.) in 74th (80-86=166).
Saint Joseph's won the team title with a 10-over par 570 thanks to a tournament-record 5-under par 275 in the opening round. The host Bison (288-288=576) and Wayne State (289=287=576) tied for second with a 16-over par 576, while Robert Morris (289-289=578) and La Salle (284-297=581) rounded out the top five.
Saint Joseph's Michael O'Brien and Lafayette's Reid Bedell were the lone players to finish the tournament under par with both shooting a 3-under 137.
The Mids return to action next Sunday when they play host to the annual Navy Fall Classic. The 15-team, 36-hole event is slated for an 8:30 am start at the Naval Academy Golf Course.
