Wreder Wins "C" Singles Flight at Stony Brook Invite

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Navy freshman Ansofi Wreder won the "C" singles flight at the Stony Brook Invitational this past weekend with a 5-0 record. Wreder and the Mids opened the 2016 fall tournament schedule with 23 singles wins and 7 doubles wins.

Wreder becomes just the second Mid in the eight years that Navy has been competing at the Stony Brook Invitational to win a singles flight. Amanda Keller won the "D" flight as a freshman at Stony Brook in 2014.

Wreder played an additional match after being seeded in one of two play-in matches in the "C" flight. Wreder opened the tournament with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Liza Rachenko (FDU) in the play-in round and then bested Tasha Christ of Bowdoin, 6-1, 6-4, in the first round. Wrder breezed past St. John's Irina Preotescu, 6-3, 6-0, in the quarterfinals and then beat Ana Carron Rodriguez of Stony Brook, 6-0, 6-3, in the semifinals. Wreder won the "C" flight title with a 6-1, 6-1 win over teammate Kaylah Hodge. Wreder won all five of her matches in straight sets.

Hodge, another Navy freshman, went 3-1 in the "C" flight and posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over teammate Carlee Conway in the semifinals.

Sophomore Josie Rogers lost her first round match in the "A" singles bracket, but won three matches in the consolation round, including an 8-5 win over Alisa Rudenko of FAU in the final consolation match of the "A" flight.

Sophomore Isabel Balsavage went 3-1 in the "D" singles flight and advanced to the flight championship match, but fell to Jaide Collins of St. John's, 6-2, 6-4.

Keller and Conway advanced to the finals of the "A" doubles flight. The duo posted wins over teams from Fairleigh Dickinson and Florida Atlantic and then had a walkover win over another Navy pairing in the semifinals. Keller and Conway were defeated by Stony Brook's Elizabeth Tsvetkov and Yana Nikolaeva in the "A" doubles final, 6-4.

"It was a good start for us this weekend," said ninth-year head coach Keith Puryear. "This is always a very tough tournament and we faced some great competition. We had some really good results and it was great to see two of our freshmen in Kaylah Hodge and Ansofi Wreder reach the "C" singles final and also having two doubles teams reach the "A" semifinals. Overall I thought the results were very positive, but we have to keep working hard and we have to keep looking at ways to continue our improvement."

Navy will host the Bill & Sandra Moore Invitational next Friday through Sunday.
