SALISBURY, Md. - In his first meet of his career, Navy men's cross country freshman Jake Brophy (New Hope, Pa.) won the individual title at the Salisbury Fall Classic Saturday morning at Winter Place Park.
"Our top finishers, Jake Brophy and Kevin Murray, raced well in their first meet," Navy head coach Al Cantello said. "It was good for all of our freshman to get their feet wet with this first meet, but they still have a long way to go before helping us in meets like the Star meet and the league championship."
Brophy, the 2014-15 Gatorade Pennsylvania State Cross Country Runner of the Year, came out strong in his first meet, placing first with a time of 25:57.20. Classmate Kevin Murray (Wilmington, Del.) crossed the finish line right after Brophy for second place. Murray clocked in at 25:58.57.
Following Brophy and Murray, freshmen Grant Birindelli, Nolan Kreipe and Andres Correa rounded out Navy's top five scorers, placing 19th, 27th and 32nd, respectively. Birindelli crossed the finish line with a time of 27:58.92, while teammates Kreipe and Correa came in at 28:29.30 and 29:08.03, respectively.
Salisbury won the overall meet with 25 team points, placing seven of the top ten runners. Navy, who ran seven freshmen at the meet, finished second with 55 team points and the top two runners. Ursinus finished third with 78, while Shenandoah tallied 82 points to round out the four team field.
Navy will look ahead to next weekend's Navy Invitational on Saturday, Sept 10 at the United States Naval Academy Golf Course. The men's varsity meet will begin at 11:00 a.m.
