Lehigh Defeats Navy on Late Goal

Box Score Oct. 7, 2017

Box Score

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Alex Greene scored in the 82nd minute to give the Lehigh men's soccer team (7-3-1, 2-1-1 PL) a 1-0 victory at Navy (2-9-1, 0-3-1 PL) in a Patriot League match on Saturday at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.

"I thought we played well," said Navy head coach Tim O'Donohue. "We were organized and we did a lot of good things. The guys gave everything we had. But it came down to us hitting some posts and Lehigh scoring late off the deflection."

The teams were playing an even match with each team getting a number of opportunities to score. However, with eight minutes left in regulation an unusual way of scoring a goal by Greene tilted the game in Lehigh's favor.

Lehigh's Doyle Tuvesson sent a cross into the box from the left side where Green tried to redirect it into the goal. The ball was initially deflected off a Navy defender's foot and went up in the air. As Greene fell after taking his shot with his back on the ground, he kicked backwards over his head and made contact with the ball again and made it change direction and find its way into the net past the Navy goalkeeper.

Navy created a number of chances in the closing minutes, but could not even the match. Senior Brock Dudley had a shot go off the cross bar in the 89th minute and senior Aubrey Jones had a shot after a corner kick go just wide in the 90th minute. Navy had three corner kicks in the final 1:42 of the game.

Navy also had a number of chances in the game's opening minutes. The Mids took three shots in the first 10 minutes with senior Daniel Zaremba and junior TJ Powers both putting shots on goal. Powers also put a header off the cross bar in the 58th minute.

Navy outshot Lehigh in the contest, 13-12, while Lehigh had a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. Navy led in corner kicks, 6-3.

Zaremba took a team-high four shots for the Mids, while freshman Phillip Gustafson registered three shots. Tuvesson recorded a game-high six shots for Lehigh.

Lehigh goalkeeper Joe Bogan, seeing his first action of the year, earned the shutout by making four saves. Navy senior goalkeeper Mac Burke made five saves.

This is the second straight season that Navy suffered a hard-luck loss to Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks defeated Navy in overtime last season, 2-1.

Lehigh is ranked sixth in this week's USC Northeast Regional rankings.

Navy will next face Army West Point (8-4-0, 2-2-0 PL) in the Army-Navy Cup VI at Talen Energy Stadium, home of Major League Soccer's Philadelphia Union, in Chester, Pa. on Sunday, October 15 at 2:00 PM. Tickets are available by clicking here.
