Women's Swimming & Diving Wins Invite

Nov. 19, 2017

PISCATAWAY, N.J. â€"â€" The Navy women's swimming and diving team won the Frank Elm Invite, a three-day meet hosted by Rutgers in Piscataway, N.J., that came to a conclusion Sunday evening. The Mids posted a final score of 1,804.50 points to best the second-place team in the 10-team field by nearly 600 points.

"We did very well this weekend," said Navy women's swimming head coach John Morrison. "We showed some real promise for this time of the season. I am excited about where we stand."

Navy placed at least one swimmer or diver in the championship final in all but two of the 15 individual events contested during the meet, with multiple Mids reaching the top final in eight events.

Headlining Navy's efforts was Lauren Barber (Jr., New Wilmington, Pa.), who won the 200 individual medley (2:00.29), 100 breaststroke (1:01.96) and 200 breaststroke events (2:14.18). Also winning an individual event for the Mids was Casey Lawson (So., Spring Lake Heights, N.J.), who won the 200 freestyle (1:47.82).

Placing second in an event were Erin Scudder (So., Western Springs, Ill.) in the 500 freestyle (4:57.33) and Kaitlyn O'Reilly (Sr., Farmington, Minn.) in the 200 IM (2:01.92). Additionally, Stephanie Downing (So., Pasadena, Md.) placed third in the 500 freestyle (4:58.87), Erin Jordan (Jr., Schnecksville, Pa.) finished in third place in the 1650 freestyle (16:55.82) and Ashley Boddiford (Fr., Oviedo, Fla.) placed third in the 200 backstroke (1:59.11).

Navy swimmers also combined to win both the 400 and 800 freestyle relay events.

"Our depth really came through for us," said Morrison. "We had been looking for that all season long. It really sets us up well for the rest of the season. And it was nice to see our two winning relay teams put up times close to the pool records we set last year at this meet when we used a few different swimmers."

The Mids are now off from competition until playing host to Army on Dec. 7.
