Nov. 4, 2017

Final Stats

LEWISBURG, Pa. â€"â€" The Navy swimming and diving teams ran their respective records to 7-0 this season as the Mids swept Patriot League foes American, Bucknell and Lafayette Saturday at Kinney Natatorium in Lewisburg, Pa.

The Navy men (7-0) defeated American (2-3) by the score of 191-68, Bucknell (2-3) by the count of 189-86 and Lafayette (1-3) by the tally of 191-95. Navy's women's team (7-0) posted a 220-76 win over the Eagles (3-2), a 177.5-120.5 victory over the Bison (4-1) and a 239-58 win over the Leopards (0-4).

"After two weeks of just training, I am pleased with our results," said Navy men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts. "We improved in several events and saw some areas we still need to work on."

"We did a nice job today with our effort and energy after a tough week at Navy with exams," said Navy women's swimming head coach John Morrison.

Navy won all 16 men's events contested on the day, with the Mids placing at least first and second in each of the 14 individual events. Four Mids earned multiple event wins during the meet. The first to double was Connor Davis (Sr., Shelton, Conn.) as he touched the wall first in both the 50 free (20.84) and 100 free (46.01) events. James Wilson (So., Ephrata, Pa.) soon followed with victories in the 100 back (49.76) and 100 fly (50.15) races. Billy Cadigan (Fr., Lutherville, Md.) also claimed a pair of victories during the meet, winning the 200 back (1:51.41) and 400 individual medley (4:01.35) contests. Completing the list of multiple event winners was diver Bradley Buchter (So., Hickory, N.C.) with wins on both the one-meter (348.3) and three-meter (360.70) boards.

Winning the first individual event of the day was Luke Johnson (Fr., Charlotte, N.C.) as he claimed the 1000 free (9:29.01). Daniel Cook (Fr., Virginia Beach, Va.) followed with a win in the 200 free (1:42.70). Dean Nguyen (Fr., Seattle, Wash.) and Nick Pfanstiel (Jr., Fishers, Ind.) soon won back-to-back events, the 100 breast (59.96) and the 200 fly (1:52.26), respectively. Victors in the second half of the meet included Michael Velazquez (Jr., Henderson, Nev.) in the 200 breast (2:06.18) and Jac Cortright (So., Richmond, Va.) in the 500 free (4:43.09).

Navy also won both the opening 200 medley relay and the closing 200 free relay.

"James Wilson was really good today from the start of the meet to the end," said Roberts. "His backstroke in the relay was good to see. Connor Davis had a good day, as did our divers.

"One of the keys for us was having lots of different guys step up and perform well. That depth was integral to our success today."

The Navy women's team earned 10 event wins during the meet, with Mids placing a minimum of first and second in six events. A trio of Mids won multiple events for the Navy women. Diver Meghan Gerdes (Fr., Spring, Texas) won both the one-meter (249.10) and three-meter (277.45) contests, Maddie Runge (So., Cochranville, Pa.) was victorious in the 1000 free (10:24.23) and 500 free (5:04.37) events and Kaitlyn O'Reilly (Sr., Farmington, Minn.) earned victories in the 100 breast (1:05.63) and 400 individual medley (4:24.54) races.

Additional winners on the day were Ali Kozlina (Fr., Cranberry Township, Pa.) in the 200 free (1:53.8), Ally Michaels (Fr., Yorkville, Ill.) in the 200 fly (2:07.12) and Lauren Barber (Jr., New Wilmington, Pa.) in the 100 free (51.35).

Navy also won the 200 medley relay race.

"It was nice to see a lot of new faces rise up in different events," said Morrison. "Meagan Gerdes is coming into her own, and the consistency of our distance crew was great. We also had lots of different swimmers perform well in some events they normally don't swim."

"Things are beginning to come together with our training and you can see it in the results of this meet," said Navy diving coach Rich MacDonald. "I was proud of how our freshmen women stepped up in their first big competition on the road. They had some impressive performances, with Meagan just missing on qualifying for the NCAA Zone Meet.

"The men swept the first four places in both events. It is fun to watch them jockeying for position each week. That makes for a competitive training environment."

Both Navy teams are off until competing in three-day meets in two weeks. The men will take part in a Nov. 16-18 meet at Purdue and the women will compete Nov. 17-19 at Rutgers.

Additionally, the Navy divers will compete in an exhibition meet against the Brazilian Naval National Team on Saturday, Nov. 11, in Lejeune Hall.
