Women's Tennis Sweeps Doubleheader on Saturday

Feb. 18, 2017

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women's tennis team swept a doubleheader at the Tose Family Tennis Center on Saturday. Navy defeated Villanova (0-3) in the morning, 6-1, and then knocked off Howard (0-3) in the afternoon, 7-0. The doubleheader sweep evened Navy's season record at 7-7.

In the opener against Villanova, Navy fell behind 1-0 after being swept in the doubles point. The Mids then rebounded to win all six singles matches for the 6-1 win over the Wildcats.

Freshman Ansofi Wreder won her team-best 18th singles match of the year by defeating Victoria Martinez at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-0, to clinch the first singles wins. Junior Carlee Conway then bested Alexandra Krogus at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-4.

Sophomore Josie Rogers defeated Kaylan Rotman at No. 1 singles, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1, freshman Kaylah Hodge beat Paulina Bajet at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-4, senior captain Rozel Hernandez bested Carina Burdick at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) and freshman Emily Louie-Meadors knocked off Lindsey Evans at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 7-5.

"Villanova came out aggressive in doubles, as they always do," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "We then did a good job of coming out hard right away in singles. We got the first set in every singles match, and a few we won handedly. Villanova made a run in some of the second sets, but we did a good job of holding them off. Villanova is a much-improved team."

Navy had a dominant performance against Howard in the afternoon, sweeping the doubles points and winning all six singles matches.

Louie-Meadors and sophomore Sabrina Jiang won the first doubles match with a 6-1 win over Alexandria Boston and Sajela Harlow at the No. 3 position. Junior Amanda Keller and Hodge then defeated Kindha Nasef and Olivia Pelham at No. 2 doubles, 6-1. Sophomore Catalina Rico and freshman Aimee Dervishian finished the doubles sweep with a win over Jessica Josiah and Nicole Hutchinson at No. 1 doubles, 6-4.

Jiang opened singles play with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Boston at No. 6 singles and freshman Meghan O'Malley followed with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Harlow at No. 4 singles. Senior Audrey Channell clinched the team win with a 6-1, 7-6 win over Pelham at No. 5 singles.

Keller then defeated Josiah at No. 1 singles, 7-5, 6-4, Rogers earned her second singles win of the day with a 6-4, 6-3 in over Hutchinson at No. 2 singles and freshman Danika Kahatapitiya finished the match with a 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 win over Nasef at No. 3 singles.

"We had a good start in all three doubles matches against Howard and we were able to ride that out after they made a run back at us," said Puryear. "I thought Howard did a really good job in singles. We lost the first set at court three and we were down early at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. We had to fight like crazy to get momentum back on our side."

With her doubles and singles wins against Howard, Keller became the sixth Navy women's tennis player to win 100 career matches. Keller has a career singles record of 62-36 and a career doubles record of 39-23 for 101 career combined wins.

"It was a good day for us," said Puryear. "It was good to get two wins, but more importantly it was good to see how we competed today how well we have put into play the lessons we have learned the last couple of weeks."

Navy will next host Seton Hall and Morgan State on Sunday, February 26.
