Men's Tennis Drops Pair of Road Matches

Feb. 19, 2017

Final Stats

PROVIDENCE, R.I. â€" The Navy men's tennis team closed out a busy road trip with 5-2 losses to Boston U. Saturday evening in Boston, Mass., and Bryant Sunday morning in Providence, R.I. The Mids have now posted a 9-5 record this season, the Terriers have tallied a mark of 4-6 and the Bulldogs, who are the pre-season favorite to win the Northeast Conference for the fourth year in a row, have compiled a 4-4 record.

Navy opened the road trip with a 6-1 loss to No. 19 (NCAA Division III) MIT Saturday morning.

"Tough weekend in the loss column," said Navy head coach Chris Garner. "The guys faced some great competition, though, and competed well against it. We need to keep working to be prepared for what lies ahead."

The doubles point between the Mids and the Terriers, who were playing a Patriot League regular season match for the first time, came down to the last match left on the courts. Boston U.'s team of Jake De Vries and Mario Sandoval would give the Terriers the point when it recorded a 7-5 win at the No. 2 flight over Aries Wong (Jr., Bethesda, Md.) and Andrey Majkic (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.).

The Terriers placed a second team point on the scoreboard early in the singles matches, but the Mids cut the margin in half when Gabriel Pilones (Fr., Bradenton, Fla.) posted a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Marc Sable at No. 4 singles. After the score became 3-1 in favor of Boston U., Wong pulled the Mids back to within one point with his 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Satyajit Simhadri at the No. 4 flight.

Boston U. would win three-set decisions at both No. 5 and No. 6 singles to hold off the Navy rally.

"We were unable to get the momentum of the matches back after dropping the doubles point," said Garner. "It was a great environment for the guys to have competed in. The team competed and supported one another well. The BU loss showed a few areas we will need to improve upon in order to challenge teams within our league."

Sunday morning, Bryant quickly put the doubles point on the board as it recorded wins at the Nos. 1 and 2 flights, then won the first three singles matches to finish to secure the overall victory.

Winning singles matches for the Mids against the Bulldogs were Walker Sims (Jr., Memphis, Tenn.) at No. 5 and Cameron Kirkpatrick (So., Menlo Park, Calif.) at No. 6. Both matches were three-set decisions.

Navy will be back in the Tose Family Tennis Center for matches Saturday against Richmond (9 a.m.) and Morgan State (1 p.m.).
