Men's Tennis Splits Saturday Doubleheader

Feb. 25, 2017

Final Stats

ANNAPOLIS, Md. â€"â€" The Navy men's tennis team split a doubleheader on Saturday, losing a 4-0 decision to Richmond on the USNA Tennis Courts and posting a 5-2 victory over Morgan State at the Tose Family Tennis Center. The Mids have now tallied a 10-6 record this season, the Spiders improved their record to 8-1 and the Bears fell to 1-7 on the season.

The doubles point between the Mids and the Spiders was not awarded until the last of the three matches was completed. Richmond would win that final match â€"â€" a 6-4 win at the No. 1 flight by the tandem of Jacob Dunbar and Alexandre Felisa over Zach Jennings (Fr., Snellville, Ga.) and Gabriel Pilones (Fr., Bradenton, Fla.) â€"â€" to take a 1-0 lead. The Spiders would then win the first three singles matches to be completed in straight sets to claim the victory.

"In doubles," said Navy head coach Chris Garner, "Richmond capitalized on their opportunities. We definitely had our looks but did not punch our ticket to get the doubles point. In singles, Richmond got a quick start at lines one through three. At four and five, Greg Durham (Fr., Melbourne Beach, Fla.) and Walker Sims (Jr., Memphis , Tenn.) were battling but we were unable to get any traction at lines one through three today.

Navy also lost the doubles point in its match against Morgan State when the Bears won the third and final match left on the courts. The Mids would tie the match at one point apiece when Krishna Jana (Sr., Seabrook, Texas) tallied a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Jeremy Field at No. 1 singles. The score became 2-1 in favor of the Mids thanks to a 6-2, 6-3 victory by Joshua Martin (Jr., Foley, Ala.) over Sagar Sathyanarayanan at the No. 6 flight.

Navy then built a 3-1 advantage when Andrey Majkic (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) defeated Nihit Rawal, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 4 singles. The Mids secured the overall victory when Ian Landwehr (Fr., Daleville, Ind.) won a 7-6 (1), 6-3 match against Ondrej Labik at No. 3 singles. Placing Navy's final point in the scoreboard was Matthew Lee (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) when he defeated Arjun Ramakrishnan, 7-6 (5), 6-3, at No. 2 singles.

"Morgan State came out playing really solid to secure the doubles point," said Garner. "Krishna led the singles lines with his energy and play knocking off Morgan's top player. Josh was able to earn the second point with a very workman like effort. Andrey had quite the comeback. Being down a set and break, it did not look promising but he found a way to create some momentum on his return games which really turned his and the overall team match around."

Navy will head to Philadelphia for a pair of matches Sunday on the Penn campus. The Mids will face the host Quakers at 1 p.m. before taking on Villanova at 5 p.m.
