PHILADELPHIA, Pa. â€"â€" The Navy men's tennis team lost a pair of matches Sunday at the Hecht Tennis Center in Philadelphia, Pa. The Mids (10-8) first lost a 7-0 decision to Penn (7-5) then dropped a 5-2 decision to Villanova (2-1).
The Quakers began the match against the Mids by winning each of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Penn then won five of the six singles matches in straight sets. Navy came out on the short end of three matches â€"â€" two doubles, one singles â€"â€" that featured a set tiebreaker. An additional decision saw Max Cancilla post a 6-4, 7-5 win over Ian Landwehr (Fr., Daleville, Ind.) at No. 4 singles, while another match was a three-set victory by Thomas Spratt over Cameron Kirkpatrick (So., Menlo Park, Calif.) at No. 5 in which final score of the third set was 6-4.
Navy would win the doubles point in its match against Villanova. Matthew Lee (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) and Andrey Majkic (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) combined for a 7-5 win at No. 2 doubles over Tyler Roth and Stefan Suarez, and the Navy duo of Andrew Hicks (So., Haddon Heights, N.J.) and Walker Sims (Jr., Memphis, Tenn.) won a 6-2 decision over Thomas Dodson and Tommy Mulfur at the No. 3 flight.
After the Wildcats evened the match at 1-1 with a win at No. 6 singles, the Mids took a 2-1 lead when Greg Durham (Fr., Melbourne Beach, Fla.) posted a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Luis Miranda at the No. 1 flight.
Villanova would win each of the remaining singles matches to earn the overall victory. Three of the matches featured tiebreakers, with the Wildcats winning each of those three sets. This included a 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 6-3 win by Dodson over Majkic at No. 5 singles.
Navy will play Saturday at George Washington before playing host to Fairleigh Dickinson on March 5.
