Women's Tennis Wins Two Close Matches on Sunday

Feb. 26, 2017

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's tennis team (9-7, 0-1 PL) pushed its winning streak to four matches with a pair of close victories on Sunday at the Tose Family Tennis Center. Navy defeated Seton Hall (3-3), 4-3, in the morning and then edged out Morgan State (0-9), 4-3, in the afternoon.

In the opener against Seton Hall, the Mids dropped the doubles point, 2-1, before winning four singles match to clinch the team win. Junior Amanda Keller and freshman Kaylah Hodge were the lone Mids to win in doubles play at the No. 3 position.

Freshman Ansofi Wreder posted a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles over Thandy Kangway and Keller followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles over Luize Strike. Freshman Emily Louie-Meadors put the Mids ahead 3-2 with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Melody Taal at No. 4 singles and sophomore Catalina Rico clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles over Anniek Jansen.

"It was a tough match," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "I think each year we've played [Seton Hall] its either been 5-2 or 4-3. We knew what they were going to bring to the table and once we got the momentum we were able to keep it going. I'm really proud of the ladies. They did a good job of dealing with some adversity today."

Navy improved to 7-1 all-time against Morgan State.

In the second match of the day against Morgan State, Navy won the doubles point, 2-1.

Sophomore Sabrina Jiang and Louie-Meadors teamed up at No. 2 doubles to defeat Yvonne Peters-Washington and Dana Santiago, 6-0, while junior Isabel Balsavage and freshman Simona Babb bested Danielle Thompson and Chloe Kabamba, 6-4, at the third position to clinch the doubles point.

Navy and Morgan State split the six singles matches and junior Carlee Conway clinched the team win with her 6-3, 6-1 win over Kabamba at No. 2 singles. Freshman Aimee Dervishian defeated Peters-Washington at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-1, and freshman Meghan O'Malley defeated Santiago at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-0.

"The Morgan State match was a hard-fought affair," said Puryear. "No. 2 and 3 doubles came up big for us to secure the doubles points. Morgan State came out with good energy in singles play and continued to push us winning three of the singles matches, but Carlee, Meghan and Aimee all played good ball to help secure the win. It was a great team effort."

Navy improved to 6-0 all-time against Morgan State.

Navy will next host #48 Iowa on Sunday, March 5.
