ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's tennis team (5-5) split a pair of matches on Saturday at the Tose Family Tennis Center. Navy fell to James Madison (4-0), 6-1, in the opening match and rebounded to defeat George Mason (3-2), 7-0, in the second match.
"I thought we competed well today," said head coach Keith Puryear. "There are always things we could do better, but we had a good showing and these results will really help us over the next few weeks when we have some more competitive doubleheaders."
In the opener against James Madison, Navy won the doubles point, but dropped all six singles matches. Navy showed its depth by using nine different players against James Madison and 16 on the day.
In doubles play, Rozel Hernandez and Carlee Conway earned the first win by defeating Emma Peterson and Rebecca Harris at No. 2 doubles, 6-3. Kaylah Hodge and Amanda Keller earned a 6-2 win over Jona Roka and Abby Amos at No. 3 doubles and Claudia Mackenzie and Emily Louie-Meadors finished the sweep with a 6-2 win over the regionally-ranked pairing of Timea Guibe and Kimmy Herrock at No. 1 doubles.
Later in the day in the in the match against George Mason, Navy won two of three doubles matches to win the doubles point and won all six singles matches.
Catalina Rico and Aimee Dervishian defeated Sydney Green and Rachel Lee at the No. 1 position, 6-3. After a George Mason win at No. 3 doubles, Navy clinched the point at No. 2 doubles where Sabrina Jiang and Meghan O'Malley outlasted Scarlett Walston and Olivia Lacy-Thompson, 7-6 (7-4).
"We were down at No. 2 doubles, but Sabrina and Meghan really clawed their way back and won it in the tiebreaker," Puryear said. "I thought we did a good job of establishing our momentum against George Mason in the doubles. Once we got the momentum going, we were rolling."
Keller won at the top of the singles ladder over Green, 6-4, 6-0, and Josie Rogers held off Morgan Yang at No. 2 singles, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6).
Ansofi Wreder bested Walston at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-1, and Louie-Meadors knocked off Lee at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-1. Danika Kahatapitiya beat Lacy-Thompson at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-2 and Isabel Balsavage defeated Nicole Haigwood at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-4.
Navy improves to 7-0 all-time against George Mason.
Navy will next host George Washington and Delaware on Sunday, Feb. 12.
