Navy Splits Pair of Men's Tennis Matches

Feb. 5, 2017

Final Stats

ANNAPOLIS, Md. â€"â€" The Navy men's tennis team split a doubleheader Sunday at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis. The Mids (7-2) lost a 6-1 decision to East Carolina (6-0) and defeated Delaware (0-1) by the same score.

The Mids began the day with their loss to the Pirates.

Navy's No. 3 doubles tandem of Greg Durham (Fr., Melbourne Beach, Fla.) and Krishna Jana (Sr., Seabrook, Texas) posted a 6-1 win over Will Bissett and Ronny Georgi, but East Carolina won the remaining two matches to claim the doubles point. The deciding match came at the No. 1 flight where the Kasey Countee and Freddie McGeehan edged Andrey Majkic (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) and Aries Wong (Jr., Bethesda, Md.) by the score of 6-4.

"Krishna and Greg got off to a quick start in doubles and road the momentum to secure the set," said Navy head coach Chris Garner. "Aries and Andrey had a few break point opportunities to pull back even in their match but ECU came up with some nice serves to consolidate the break and take the doubles point."

The Pirates then won four straight-set singles matches to secure the overall victory. Navy's point was earned by Wong, who defeated Freddie McGeehan at No. 1 singles by the score of 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9). One of the wins for the visitors was a 7-5, 5-7, 1-0 (10-6) win by Georgi over Durham at the No. 3 flight.

Two additional close matches won by the Pirates came at the No. 2 flight, a 6-2, 6-3 win by Vlad Anghel over Gabriel Pilones (Fr., Bradenton, Fla.), and at No. 5 singles, where Countee defeated Zach Jennings (Fr., Snellville, Ga.), 6-2, 6-4.

"In singles," said Garner, "ECU jumped out to early leads in a number of spots. We were unable to make those matches competitive resulting in a 5-0 deficit. It was great to see Aries and Greg pushing their opponents to a third-set tiebreaker, with Aries eventually notching the win."

Navy bounced back later in the day to defeat Delaware.

The Mids began the dual by losing only a combined five games in sweeping the three doubles matches. Two of Navy's tandems â€"â€" Jennings and Pilones at No. 1, Cameron Kirkpatrick (So., Menlo Park, Calif.) and Ian Landwehr (Fr., Daleville, Ind.) at No. 3 â€"â€" won their respective matches by the score of 6-1.

"Against Delaware," said Garner, "the guys came out and played a very aggressive doubles point in securing the 1-0 lead."

Navy then won five of the six singles matches, with all five of those victories coming in straight sets.

First to finish was the No. 2 match where Jana recorded a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Colin Wong, then a 6-1, 6-1 victory by Thomas Pecor (Sr., Houston, Texas) over Blaise Casselbury at the No. 1 flight made the score 3-0 in favor of the Mids. Joshua Martin's (Jr., Foley, Ala.) 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles over Tyler Flematti gave Navy its match-clinching fourth team point of the day.

Also recording wins for the Mids were Landwehr at No. 4 (6-4, 6-3) and Kirkpatrick at No. 6 (6-1, 7-6 [7-5]). The final match of the day saw Delaware's Venkatesh Ramkumar edge Pilones, 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 1-0 (10-7), at No. 3 singles.

"Krishna was off the court first playing a very strong all-around match, with Thomas following suit," said Garner. "It is important to see senior leadership because without it a team can fall into disarray pretty quickly.

"I was very impressed with our Nos. 4-6 players. All three of the guys played well from start to finish."

Navy will be back on the Tose Family Tennis Center courts Saturday when it plays host to George Mason (9 a.m.) and Liberty (1 p.m.).
