ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy baseball team saw its 11-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium. After winning Friday's series opener by a 9-5 score and with 13 hits, the Mids (14-9) struggled to put together substantial multi-hit and multi-run innings versus a game Tigers (4-12) pitching staff that controlled the flow of the doubleheader. Princeton took game one by a score of 4-2 before closing out the twinbill with a 5-2 victory.

"Both of the Princeton starting pitchers did a really good job of throwing fastballs down in the zone and then effectively with two strikes elevating and we just couldn't catch up," remarked head coach Paul Kostacopoulos. "We had four hits in game one and eight in game two so their pitching dominated the complexion of both games."

Stephen Born (Jr., Strafford, Pa.) and Jacob Williamson (Fr., Sims, N.C.) led Navy's offense with three hits over the doubleheader. Born recorded the Mids' lone extra-base hit on Saturday with a ground-rule double in game two. Zach Biggers (Fr., Walhalla, S.C.) and Evan Lowery (Fr., Williamsburg, Va.) plated Navy's four runs during the two games as Biggers singled in two in the first contest before Lowery did the same in the second matchup.

On the mound, Kyle Condry (Sr., Highland Village, Texas) turned in a quality start with a complete game four-hitter over seven innings in game one. He gave up four runs in the loss, but only two were earned as he finished with a 2.57 ERA on the day and a .182 opponents' batting average. In game two relief, the trio of Trey Seabrooke (Fr., Jacksonville, Fla.), Brian Wikoff (Sr., Shrewsbury, N.J.) and Williamson gave Navy 2.2 innings of scoreless action out of the bullpen.

"Kyle did his job and grinded through seven innings," said Kostacopoulos. "Getting seven innings, especially in a four-game series like this with three nine-inning games; that was important. Getting a complete game allowed us to save our bullpen. That's what we needed."

Princeton 4 - Navy 2 (7 innings)

The first game of the doubleheader was a crisply played game where pitchers from both sides controlled the action.

The only inning where both the Tigers and Mids recorded multiple hits and subsequently multiple runs off of starting pitchers Kyle Condry and James Proctor was the second. In the top of the second, Princeton got to Condry for four runs on three hits, an error and a walk. The Tigers led off the inning with a solo home run by Zack Belski.

Down 4-0, the Mids responded immediately in the bottom of the frame as seven batters came up versus Proctor. A leadoff walk to Leland Saile (Sr., Land O'Lakes, Fla.), a single through the left side by Williamson and a walk to Lowery loaded the bases with two outs and set the stage for Biggers to come through with a two-run single.

With the score 4-2 in favor of Princeton after two full innings, both pitchers found their groove and the opposing offenses went silent. Condry faced 17 batters over the final five innings with just one hit by the Tigers against the right-handed pitcher. In two situations where Condry walked a batter his defense came through and turned double plays.

Proctor was equally as effective as he too faced 17 batters over the last five innings of the seven-inning contest.

The game would go final at that same 4-2 score. For the contest, both teams recorded four hits with Princeton's Ramzi Haddad being the only player with multiple hits.

Proctor earned the victory for the visiting Tigers, while Condry was saddled with the loss. Condry finished the game with a line of 7.0 innings, four hits, four runs (two earned), three walks and four strikeouts over 103 pitches.

Princeton 5 - Navy 2

The second contest on Saturday followed a similar pattern as each team had one multi-run inning and then had their bats held in check with differing levels of success.

Both George Coughlin (Sr., Arvada, Colo.) for Navy and Ben Gross for Princeton made quick work of the first three innings as Coughlin allowed just one hit a third-inning double, while Gross was tagged for two singles, one by Born in the first inning and one by Logan Knowles (Jr., Port Orchard, Wash.) in the third.

Princeton broke open the scoring in the top of the fourth as back-to-back singles and a throwing error got the wheels in motion before Max West got a hold of a Coughlin offering and sent out a home run.

The Tigers would add one run to their 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth with an error, two singles and a sacrifice fly.

Navy looked to get back into the game in the bottom of the sixth as Travis Blue (Sr., Orange, Calif.) drew a one-out walk before Born connected for a ground-rule double over the right field wall. With runners on second and third, Lowery plated both with a hard-hit, one-hop grounder up the middle that glanced off the Princeton shortstop, who was blocked out by a Born screen.

With the game sitting at a two-run margin, Princeton added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to make it 5-2. Navy's bullpen shut down the Tigers for the remainder of the contest with appearances by Wikoff, Seabrooke and Williamson.

The Mids went down fighting as they had two men on in both the seventh and ninth innings, but were unable to pull out that big third hit to manufacture runs.

"We were never able to get that back-to-back-to-back inning where we strung together three really good at bats," said Kostacopoulos. "They were able to stop us from getting a big inning and their pitchers did a good job of controlling the tempo of the game. We weren't able to get much of anything going because of that."

In the 5-2 loss to Princeton, Navy was outhit 13-8. The Mids received two hits each from Born, Williamson and Matthew Wilcox (So., Los Gatos, Calif.).

Ben Gross earned the win for Princeton, while Coughlin took the loss after throwing 5.0 innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks. The senior right-hander struck out five in his outing.

Navy and Princeton will close out their four-game series on Sunday with a single nine-inning tilt. The action at Max Bishop Stadium is set for 1 p.m. For fans unable to attend the game, the contest will be aired over the Patriot League Network.
