Mids Take Sixth at Wildcat Invitational, Fricke Places Fourth

MALVERN, Pa.
-- After shooting the third-lowest score in Tuesday's final round, the Navy men's golf team placed sixth out of 19 teams at the Wildcat Invitational with a 12-over par 580 (291-289). The Mids were able to push past Fordham to move up one spot in the final standings.

Lehigh captured the team title after catapulting from third place thanks to shooting par in the final round (286-284=570), while Cleveland State also shot par over the final 18 holes to jump from fourth to second with a 572 (288-284). Delaware (573) took third followed by St. John's (576) and Villanova (576) who tied for fourth. Navy, meanwhile, finished four strokes outside of the top five and two strokes ahead of Fordham who dropped back from fifth to seventh with a 582 for the tournament.

Junior Thomas Fricke (Haymarket, Va.) paced the Mids with his 1-under par 141 to finish fourth. Fricke opened the tournament with a career-low 3-under par 68 to stand atop the individual leader board, but turned in a 2-over par 73 on Tuesday to earn his first top-five finish of the season.

Sophomore Griffin Peters (Fountain Hills, Ariz.) rebounded from his opening-round 76 to shoot 1-under on Tuesday to place 25th with a 146 (+4). Sophomore Matthew Starobin (Davidsonville, Md.) was the most consistent golfer for the Mids over 36 holes putting together rounds of 74 and 73 (147) to take 31st. Team captain Connor Tallman (Lake Oswego, Ore.) also improved upon his first-round 76 with a 2-over par 73 on Tuesday to place 41st with a 149. Rounding out the field for Navy was rookie Thomas Garbee (Asheville, N.C.) who slipped from his 73 in Monday's first round to a 79 over the final 18 holes. Garbee finished 69th with a 152.

Playing via individual status, sophomore Paul Mauer (Eagleville, Pa.) tied for 48th with a 150 and featured a 3-over par 74 in the final round.

The Mids will be back in action April 7-9 when they travel to Salem, S.C. to compete in the 54-hold Clemson Invitational.
