STERLING, Va. â€"â€" The Navy men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to George Washington Saturday afternoon in Sterling, Va. The Mids fell to 10-9 on the season with the loss while the Colonials improved to 8-4 with the victory.
George Washington won the first two doubles matches to finish to earn the doubles point before Navy's No. 2 tandem of Cameron Kirkpatrick (So., Menlo Park, Calif.) and Ian Landwehr (Fr., Daleville, Ind.) won a 6-3 decision over Christos Hadjigeorgiou and Chris Reynolds.
"Cam and Ian played really well in doubles today," said Navy head coach Chris Garner. "They were closing out a number of points with winning volleys and overheads. George Washington was able to take the doubles point with a high percentage of first serves as well as a lot of aggressive returns."
The Colonials then won five straight-set singles matches to notch the victory. Included among those results were Zach Jennings (Fr., Snellville, Ga.) dropping a 6-4, 6-4 decision at the No. 2 flight and Kirkpatrick falling by the score of 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. Additionally, Landweher lost a 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (10-7) match at the No. 4 flight.
"In singles play," said Garner, "Cam, Ian and Zach were all in very competitive matches, but George Washington played some great tennis on the no-ad points. Zach and his opponent went back and forth for two close sets. They both were coming up with a lot of great shots."
Navy will return to the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis Sunday for a 4 p.m. match against Fairleigh Dickinson.
