ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The No. 47 Iowa women's tennis team (10-1) edged Navy (9-8), 5-2, Sunday afternoon at the Tose Family Tennis Center. Navy won a pair of singles matches against Big Ten-member Iowa and pushed the Hawkeyes to a third set in two other singles slots in a tightly-contested match.
The Mids trailed just 3-2 in the overall match with two singles matches in the third set, but the Hawkeyes picked up both of the remaining matches for the 5-2 victory.
"It was a tight match," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "I really like the way we competed today. With Iowa being 47th in the country, I liked the way we handled ourselves. But at the same time, it hurts because we were right there and we were very capable of springing the upset. Iowa didn't give us anything today and we had to earn everything. But we had our chances on several of the courts."
Iowa opened the competition by winning the doubles point, 2-1. The lone Navy doubles team to win a match was senior Rozel Hernandez and junior Carlee Conway at the No. 2 position. The pairing defeated Aimee Tarun and Natalie Looney, 6-2.
Navy freshman Ansofi Wreder swept Kristen Thoms at the No. 4 position, 6-3, 6-3, in the first singles match to conclude on Sunday. Wreder improved to a team-best 20-7 in singles play this season. Wreder previously won a singles match against Big Ten-member Maryland on Jan. 25.
Sophomore Josie Rogers posted a straight set win over Anastasia Reimchen at the No. 3 position, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3). Rogers and Wreder now share the team lead of seven singles dual wins this spring.
Rogers' win cut Iowa's lead to 3-2, but the Hawkeyes were able to edge out Navy in three sets at the No. 2 and No. 6 positions to seal the 5-2 win.
Junior Claudia Mackenzie fell in three sets at the No. 2 position to Zoe Douglas, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, and freshman Kaylah Hodge fell in three sets at the No. 6 position to Tarun, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (7-3).
This was the first ever meeting between Navy and Iowa. Iowa entered the weekend undefeated, but fell at No. 42 Maryland on Saturday, 5-2.
Navy will next host Longwood on Monday (tomorrow) at 2:00 PM at the Tose Family Tennis Center in the Brigade Sports Complex.
