ANNAPOLIS, Md. â€"â€" The Navy men's tennis team (16-17) split a pair of matches Sunday in Washington, D.C., losing a 4-0 decision to Georgetown (5-10) and defeating The Citadel (10-26) by the score of 5-2.
Georgetown won the first two doubles matches to finish â€"â€" 6-3 at No. 1, 6-2 at No. 2 â€"â€" to earn the doubles point in Navy's first match of the day. Navy's No. 3 team of Joshua Martin (Jr., Foley, Ala.) and Thomas Pecor (Sr., Houston, Texas) held a 5-4 lead over Michael Chen and Ian Witmer when play was halted due to the doubles point being determined. The Hoyas would win three very close singles matches at the four-court Georgetown Visitation Prep facility to close out the match.
Peter Beatty defeated Pecor, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 1, Jordan Portner held off Gabriel Pilones (Fr., Bradenton, Fla.), 7-6, 7-5, at No. 3 and Chen defeated Zach Jennings (Fr., Snellville, Ga.), 6-7, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4 singles.
"Georgetown came out playing very well in doubles," said Navy head coach Chris Garner. "They converted on their opportunities to take the doubles point. We definitely had our chances in singles but Georgetown played well when they needed to in order to squash any opportunity we had to make the match more competitive."
Navy turned the tables in its match against The Citadel as the Mids won each of the three doubles matches to earn the first point of the contest. Andrey Majkic (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) and Aries Wong (Jr., Bethesda, Md.) lost just one game in defeating Michael Anzalone and Isaac Stolar at No. 2 doubles, then Cameron Kirkpatrick (So., Menlo Park, Calif.) and Ian Landwehr (Fr., Daleville, Ind.) combined for a 6-3 victory over Connor Grady and Noah Nawabi at No. 3 doubles to secure the point.
The remaining match saw Jennings and Pilones defeat Matthew Henson and W. Jacobus von Zyl by the score of 6-3 at the No. 1 flight.
Pilones would give the Mids their second point by not losing a game in defeating Henson at No. 2 singles. The Navy lead grew to 3-0 when Walker Sims (Jr., Memphis, Tenn.) defeated Nawabi, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 4 flight. Jennings clinched the overall match for the Mids with his 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 victory over von Zyl at No. 3 singles.
Earning the final point for Navy was Pecor with his 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 win over Anzalone at No. 1 singles.
We came out of the gate quickly in doubles and finished strong," said Garner of the team's second match of the day. "In singles, Gabe and Walker played aggressive tennis to each win in straight sets. Both Zach and Thomas were able to pull out difficult three-set wins against strong willed players."
Navy will play two matches on Friday and two more on Saturday, with all four matches being played on the road. Starting the weekend off for the Mids are matches at Loyola and Lafayette on Friday, with contests at Mount St. Mary's and Bucknell slated for Saturday.
