ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Seniors
Rozel Hernandez and
Audrey Channell each won matches on Senior Day and the Navy women's tennis team (15-9, 3-1 PL) defeated visiting Bucknell (9-6, 1-2 PL) 6-1, at the USNA Varsity Tennis Courts on Sunday. Navy has now won its last four matches.
"I want to congratulate our two seniors for their dedication and loyalty," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "It was great to see them compete so well in their last home competition."
Navy opened the competition on Sunday by sweeping the doubles point and the Mids then won five singles matches from the No. 2 to No. 6 positions.
Junior Amanda Keller and freshman Kaylah Hodge won the first doubles match at the No. 3 position over Melissa Parks and Jill Auteri, 6-1. Junior Claudia Mackenzie and freshman Emily Louie-Meadors then clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Lauren Fishbein and Michele Urbinati at the No. 1 slot. Hernandez and junior Carlee Conway made it a doubles sweep with a 7-5 win over Lisa Jouravleva and Emilie Bush at No. 2.
Louie-Meadors was the first player to complete her singles match, breezing past Madeline Melch at the No. 5 position, 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Ansofi Wreder then followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Paige Leavy at the No. 4 slot. Wreder improved her team-best singles record to 23-8, while Louie-Meadors is now 18-9.
Channell clinched the team win on Senior Day at 4-0 with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Parks at the No. 6 position.
Navy added two more singles wins as sophomore Josie Rogers defeated Urbinati at No. 3, 6-1, 6-4, and junior Claudia Mackenzie outlasted Fishbein at the No. 2 position, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.
Navy is now 10-2 all-time against Bucknell.
"Bucknell competed well," said Puryear. "There are some good takeaways from this match for us. There are also some areas I am not satisfied with that we will address as we prepare for Army on Saturday."
Puryear now has a career record of 599-359 in 28 years of coaching men's and women's college tennis.
Navy will next play at Army West Point in the 2017 Star Match on Saturday, April 8. The Army-Navy women's tennis Star Match is a part of the 2016-17 Army-Navy Star Series presented by USAA.
