RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Navy men's soccer team (0-1-0) fell at Manhattan (1-0-0), 1-0, in its season opener at Gaelic Park on Friday evening. Manhattan scored the game's lone goal in the 77th minute.

Manhattan sophomore midfielder Milan Devuyst took a shot that was saved by Navy goalkeeper Mac Burke, but senior forward Troy Carrington was there to knock in the rebound for the game-winning goal.

"We had a lot of good play," said Navy head coach Tim O'Donohue. "But we just had a critical mistake, and that was the difference."

Manhattan goalkeeper Connor Hayes made three saves in the shutout victory. Senior defender Joe Hulme took a game-high four shots for the Jaspers.

Burke registered seven saves for the Midshipmen.

Manhattan outshot Navy 18-7 in the contest and had an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal. Manhattan also had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks in the game.

After registering just two shots in the first half, the Mids recorded three shots in the first six minutes of the second half with freshman Jarvian Wigfall, sophomore Ben Nicholas and senior Daniel Zaremba taking opportunities, but the Mids could not convert.

"We came out firing in the second half," said O'Donohue. "Jarvian hit the post and we had some chances. Then Manhattan had their turn and we couldn't weather the storm."

Zaremba took a team-high three shots for the Mids.

Navy started three freshmen in its season opener in Wigfall, forward Nicko West and midfielder Wyatt Millard. Freshman Phillip Gustafson played 29 minutes off of the bench.

"We played relatively well at times," said O'Donohue. "Jarvian had a good game and our back four was much-improved. I thought the boys played hard and we just have to now get ready for NJIT on Monday."

Navy's defensive backline on Friday consisted of senior Brock Dudley, junior TJ Powers and sophomores Andrew Hopkins and Diego Manrique.

The all-time series between Navy and Manhattan is now even at 1-1.

Navy will next host NJIT (1-0-0) in its home opener on Monday at 7:00 PM at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
