ANNAPOLIS, Md. - NJIT senior forward Mamadou Guirassy scored the game's lone goal as the visiting Highlanders (2-0) defeated Navy (0-2), 1-0, in the Midshipmens' home opener at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility on Monday evening.
NJIT's Furkan Kokcu played a ball through the right side of Navy's defense in the 26th minute, which Guirassy tracked down and then shot back across the penalty box to the far post to notch the game-winning goal. Guirassy, who hails from Paris, France, was an all-region player last season.
"I am disappointed with the result, but am happy with the progress and the growth we are making," said Navy head coach Tim O'Donohue. "Obviously you want to score goals, but the creativity, technical quality and athleticisim is there. We are much better than we were a week ago. I am really happy with our progress, and I see good potential in this group."
Navy was competitive throughout the entire game and had several good chances to score the equalizer, but could not find the back of the net.
Navy freshman midfielder Jarvian Wigfall took a game-high four shots in the contest and also created opportunities for his teammates. Wigfall had a great look that went just wide in the 75th minute and he struck a low-driving shot in the 87th minute required NJIT goalkeeper Victor Pujades to make a diving save to his right side to preserve NJIT's late 1-0 lead.
Navy and NJIT each took 12 shots in the contest. In addition to Wigfall's four shots, freshman Wyatt Millard, sophomore Ben Nicholas and senior Daniel Zaremba took two shots apiece.
NJIT's Thomas Radon matched Wigfall's game-high total of four shots, while Danny Cordeiro put three shots on goal.
Pujades made two saves for NJIT, earning his second shutout of the season. Senior goalkeeper Mac Burke made five saves for the Mids.
O'Donohue started four freshmen on Friday in Wigfall, Millard, Nicko West and Toni Adewole, while fellow freshman Phillip Gustafson was the lone player used off the bench.
Navy had to play without team captain and two-time all-conference honoree Brock Dudley, who was out with an injury.
NJIT is now 2-1 in the all-time series with Navy.
Dating back to last season, Navy has now played in 17-straight games that have ended in ties or with a one-goal differential. The Mids are 4-10-3 in those 17 contests.
The Mids will next host Campbell (1-1) on Thursday at 7:00 PM. The Campbell match will be Navy's second of four-straight home games.
