Navy Wins Four Flights at the Moore Invitational

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's tennis program had a very successful weekend in winning four of six flights at the Bill & Sandra Moore Invitational at the Brigade Sports Complex. Navy captured the top three singles flights and the top doubles flight. The Mids were an impressive 31-13 in singles matches over the weekend and 13-7 in doubles play.

The tournament was played at the indoor Tose Family Tennis Center and the outdoor Fluegel-Moore Tennis Stadium.

"I feel pretty good about where we are and the progress that we have been making," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "But we have to just keep our nose to the grindstone, and we have to keep trying to improve. We've been working really hard so far this season and we have been seeing tremendous improvement across the board."

Navy senior Amanda Keller had an outstanding weekend, capturing the A singles flight championship and teaming with sophomore Kaylah Hodge to win the A doubles championship. Keller had a combined record of 6-0 in singles and doubles matches this weekend. She won all three of her singles matches in straight sets.

Keller opened singles play with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Fairleigh Dickinson's Tatiana Eftenoiu in the quarterfinal round. She then defeated Lehigh's Christina Auyeung in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-2. Keller won the A flight by sweeping Lehigh's Sibel Can, 6-2, 6-2.

This is the first time a Midshipman has won the A singles flight in Navy's nine years of hosting the Moore Invitational. The four overall flight championships are also a new Moore Invitational-high for Navy.

Keller and Hodge opened play in the A doubles flight with a 6-2 win over Binghamton's Samara Eisenberg and Tiffany Dun in the quarterfinal round. The pair then bested teammates Carlee Conway and Catalina Rico in the semifinals, 6-1. Keller and Hodge then faced another Navy team in the final, defeating Emily Louie-Meadors and Claudia Mackenzie, 7-5, to win the flight.

Keller is currently ranked third in program history in career singles wins (73) and is tied for fourth in career doubles wins (53).

"We've been practicing pretty hard, getting back into it from the summer when we take time off," said Keller. "I'm just trying to enjoy my last year and play hard. We like to grind it out, run hard after every ball and make our opponents play."

Keller and Hodge were ranked ninth in the year-end ITA Atlantic Region doubles rankings last spring.

Louie-Meadors and Mackenzie were 2-1 in the A doubles flight.

Freshman Brooke Bogdanovich became the second Navy plebe to win a singles flight this fall by winning the B bracket at the Moore Invitational. Classmate Amanda Cyr won the C singles flight at the Stony Brook Invitational last weekend.

Bogdanovich's 4-0 run through the B flight began with a 6-2, 6-0 win over St. Bonaventure's Dominique Mortier in the first round. She then bested Lehigh's Grace Lin in the quarterfinals, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6). Bogdanovich then beat teammate Mackenzie in the semifinals, 6-3, 6-1, and captured the B flight with a 6-1, 1-6, 1-0 (10-7) win over NJIT's Natacha Minc in the championship.

Cyr lost her first match in the B bracket, but went 3-0 in consolation matches to win the backdraw. Cyr posted backdraw wins over Monmouth's Chinonye Gabriel (8-2), Lehigh's Briana Maravich (4-1, retired) and St. Bonaventure's Mortier (8-5). Cyr is a team-best 7-1 in singles matches this season.

It was a Navy vs. Navy contest in the C singles final as Conway defeated freshman Miranda Deng, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-3), to win the bracket. Conway went 4-0 in the flight and opened with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Binghamton's Paulina Tafler in the first round. Conway then defeated Lehigh's Paula Gonzalez in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-6) and knocked off Lehigh's Kristin Godau in the semifinals, 6-4, 6-1.

Deng reached the C final by beating Binghamton's Emily Long in the first round, 6-0, 6-0, teammate Rico in the quarterfinals, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-4) and Fairleigh Dickinson's Patricia Eftenoiu in the semifinals, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7).

The freshman doubles pairing of Cyr and Deng went 2-1 in the B doubles flight to reach the bracket final. The pair defeated Binghamton's Maria Pandya and Maya Haykal in the quarterfinals, 6-0, and then beat Fairleigh Dickinson's Patricia Eftenoui and Liza Rachenko in the semifinals, 6-2. The duo fell to NJIT's Natacha Minc and Amanda Helminsky in the B doubles final, 6-4.

Navy's 16-player roster was an incredible 15-1 in their first singles match of the tournament.

Keller will represent Navy in the historic Milwaukee Tennis Classic beginning this Thursday in Wisconsin. The rest of the team will return to action the weekend of Oct. 6-8 for the annual Navy Blue & Gold Invitational.
