Box Score

BALTIMORE, Md. - UMBC (5-1-1) scored two goals in a span of 3:39 late in the first half to post a 2-0 victory over Navy (1-6-0) on Wednesday evening at the Retriever Soccer Park. UMBC is ranked seventh in this week's United Soccer Coaches East Region Poll.

"You can't get behind to a good team like UMBC," said Navy head coach Tim O'Donohue. "We fought and we worked hard, but UMBC won a lot of aerial balls and they got behind us a couple times with some pace. They are a very dangerous team."

This was Navy's final non-conference contest before Patriot League play begins on Saturday against Holy Cross.

"It's a second season now for us going into Patriot League play," said O'Donohue. "We have a lot of young players that have learned a lot of lessons so far this season. Now we are going to battle in the Patriot League for nine conference games."

In the 34th minute, UMBC's sophomore forward Tre Pulliam passed the ball into the box from the left side and junior midfielder Patrick Jean-Gilles struck a low one-touched shot to the left side of the goal from 16 yards out. It was Jean-Gilles' first goal of the season.

Three minutes later, junior midfielder James Gielen sent a chip shot over the back line from midfield that Pulliam tracked down. Navy senior goalkeeper Mac Burke came out of the goal to challenge and Pulliam got an angle around him to the left to make it 2-0. It was Pulliam's first goal of the 2017 season after leading UMBC in goals scored last year with four.

Navy freshman midfielder Jarvian Wigfall and senior midfielder Aubrey Jones both put shots on goal in the first 30 minutes of the first half, but both were saved by UMBC freshman goalkeeper Ciaran O'Loughlin.

Burke made five saves in the contest for Navy, including a tough save in the 29th minute when he punched a dangerous free kick by sophomore Jon Bell over the cross bar.

O'Loughlin made two saves to earn his third shutout of the season for the Retrievers.

UMBC outshot Navy in the contest, 17-4. The Retrievers held a 7-2 edge in shots on goal and a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Navy holds a 19-6-4 lead in the all-time against UMBC and the two teams were meeting for the eighth straight season. UMBC's win on Wednesday snapped Navy's three-game winning streak in the series.

Navy will host Holy Cross (2-4-1) on Saturday at 11:00 AM at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
