ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Senior forward Daniel Zaremba had a goal and an assist and senior goalkeeper Mac Burke earned the shutout as the Navy men's soccer team (2-6-1) defeated Saint Joseph's (2-5-2), 3-0, in a non-conference match at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility on Tuesday evening.
Freshmen Toni Adewole and Phillip Gustafson joined Zaremba in the scoring column on Tuesday and junior TJ Powers recorded two assists in the game.
"We played really well," said Navy head coach Tim O'Donohue. "We tweaked a few things tonight and the young guys are coming along and playing more maturely. I feel like we are developing and we have made some good improvements. Everyone contributed tonight and I'm really happy for the guys to have this positive feeling."
Adewole scored the game's first goal in the 17th minute. Powers took the ball down the right sideline and made a move around a defender. He then sent a pass into the penalty box where Adewole struck the ball to the left side of the goal. It was Adewole's first career goal. It was also the sixth time in nine games this season that Navy scored the game's first goal.
Navy added a second goal in the 64th minute when Powers set up Zaremba for his tally. Powers possessed the ball on the right side and passed to the top of the box to Zaremba. Zaremba spun to control the ball and then ripped a shot from 18 yards out for his team-best third goal of the season.
Powers became the first Navy player to have two assists in a game since the 2015 season. Powers also had an assist in Navy's last game, a 1-1 tie with Holy Cross on Saturday, and he leads the team with three assists in 2017.
Navy added a third goal in the 78th minute when Gustafson streaked down the middle of the field and played a ball to the left side to Zaremba, who deftly sent the ball back to Gustafson after drawing a defender, and then Gustafson finished to the back of the net. It was Gustafson's second goal of the season.
Zaremba registered three points on the night with his goal and assist and he has a team-best seven points on the season. He took four shots in the contest and three were on goal.
"Soccer is about difference-makers and Zaremba was one tonight," said O'Donohue. "He created goals and he finished. He was excellent tonight."
This was the second time Navy has scored three goals this season. Navy defeated James Madison, 3-1, on Sept. 9.
Navy outshot Saint Joseph's, 14-13, and had an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Burke made five saves to record his first shutout of the season and the fifth of his career.
Greg O'Connell made five saves for the Hawks. Matt Crawford took a team-high four shots in the game for Saint Joseph's.
Navy improved to 9-0-0 all-time against Saint Joseph's. The nine straight wins against Saint Joseph's is Navy's longest active winning streak against a Division I opponent.
Navy will next play at Patriot League preseason favorite Loyola on Saturday at 7:00 PM.
