ANNAPOLIS, Md. ––
Patricia Mattingly (Sr., New Albany, Ind.) continued to etch her name in the Navy volleyball record book during the team's 25-10, 25-13, 25-20 victory over Lehigh Friday night at the Wesley A. Brown Field House in Annapolis. The Mids (16-6, 8-1 Patriot League) won their fifth match in a row with the sweep of the Mountain Hawks (16-5, 5-4).
"I'm not sure anyone could have scripted a better Senior Night," said Navy head coach
Paco Labrador. "Not only did our seniors play well on an emotional night, their teammates worked relentlessly to ensure the Class of 2019 had a night to remember."
After holding Senior Night ceremonies for the six-player Class of 2019, Navy took firm hold of the first set early and never let go. The Mids scored the opening three points of the match and soon built leads of 6-1, 11-4 and 15-5. Navy totaled 19 kills and just one attack error on 31 attempts for a hitting percentage of .581 in the first frame. Additionally, the Mids successfully sided out on all but one of the 11 serves attempted by the Mountain Hawks.
Individually,
Maddi Sgattoni (So., Pittsburgh, Pa.) registered eight kills in the first set for the Mids.
The second set was tied at 8-8 when Navy tallied back-to-back points. The Mids eventually held a 15-12 lead when they went on a 7-0 run to take a 21-12 advantage.
Navy's offense slowed down somewhat in the second set as it hit a more pedestrian .267, but once again the ability to side out was key for the Mids. Navy notched 11 points on the 13 Lehigh serves in the set.
The first set saw Navy's wing hitters total all but three of the team's 19 kills. Conversely, middle hitters
Sarena Seelbach (Jr., Chapel Hill, N.C.) and
Katie Patrick (Sr., Aurora, Colo.) combined for eight of the team's 10 kills in set two.
Set three was by far the closest of the night. The score was tied 14 times and the lead changed hands on five occasions. Neither team held a lead of more than two points until the Mids were able to go on a 3-0 run to take a 22-18 lead. Lehigh quickly erased half of that margin, which led to a Navy timeout.
Kelsey Kingsland (Sr., Blackwell, Mo.) posted a kill out of the break to give the Mids a 23-20 lead, then
Emily Solis (Jr., Leesburg, Va.) dropped in her second service ace of the night to take the Mids to match point. Navy converted on its first chance to win the match on a Lehigh ball handling error.
Whereas the opening set offense came at the pins and the second set saw the middles have success, set three had great balance as the middle hitters posted five kills and the outside hitters totaled eight. In all, the Mids hit .333 and had just two attack errors in the final set.
Navy hit a sizzling .394 on the night –– the No. 3 hitting percentage by the Mids in school history in a Patriot League match that lasted three sets –– with 42 kills balanced out by only five attack errors on 94 attempts. On the other side of the net, Lehigh was held to a .140 attack percentage (30 kills, 16 errors, 100 swings). The Mids also led the Mountain Hawks in aces (6-1), digs (46-38) and blocks (8-1).
"I can't say eight about the confidence our hitters are playing with and the cohesiveness between our blocking and our defense," said Labrador.
Navy had five hitters total double figure attempts in the match. Three of them posted 10 or more kills and four of them hit at least .400.
Seelbach led the Mids with 11 kills and a .476 attack percentage, Kingsland tallied 10 kills and a .450 hitting performance and Sgattoni finished the night with 10 kills and a .308 hitting percentage. Both Patrick and
Olivia Rozmus (Jr., Chicago, Ill.) finished with three blocks and
Sydney Shearn (Sr., Louisville, Ky.) grabbed 15 digs. Team captain
Darby Minton (Sr., Chino Hills, Calif.) totaled six digs and one ace on the night.
Mattingly would notch a double-double of 36 assists and 10 digs. It was the 47
th double-double of her career, which moves her into a tie with Jessica Van Norman for the most assists-digs double-doubles in a career in school history (statistics available since 1991). Her last dig of the night gave her 1,005 for her career, which ranks sixth in Navy history and fourth among rally scoring players (since 2001). Already the school record holder with 3,511 career assists, Mattingly is the first Navy player and the eighth in Patriot League history to amass over 3,000 assists and 1,000 digs in a career.
"Our passers were our rocks again," said Labrador, "allowing Trish to set an exceptional match and earn 1,000 career digs. That accomplishments reflects her investment in this team and her athleticism in the back row."
Navy will be back on the courts Saturday at noon when it plays host to Bucknell.
