Women’s Tennis Wins Two Flights at Navy Blue & Gold Invitational

Navy competes at ITA Atlantic Regional later this week

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women's tennis team capped off its home fall slate on Sunday afternoon with two flight victories at the Navy Blue & Gold Invitational at the Brigade Sports Complex. The duo of Miranda Deng (So., North Potomac, Md.) and Annalise Klopfer (Fr., Palm Harbor, Fla.) won the doubles "B" flight and Meghana Komarraju (Fr., Vienna, Va.) won the singles "C" flight.

This marks the second-straight tournament Deng has won a doubles flight, while Klopfer and Komarraju both win their first career tournaments.

"I can't complain about the results," head coach Keith Puryear said after competition on Sunday. "We did well to have two individuals and two doubles teams make the finals in a tournament of this caliber. That says something about the direction that we have been moving in. With this being the last full event for us in the fall, I liked much of what I saw. As always there are still things we need to continue to work on and focus on, but if we use this as a springboard for the spring and focus on those little things, we will be fine."

In the singles "C" flight, Komarraju got off to a strong start with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Helene Heiberg of Richmond and she continued the straight-set run in the quarterfinals after winning a 6-1, 6-1 contest over Towson's Amelia Lawson. In an all-Navy semifinal in the "C" flight, Komarraju beat her teammate Kacey Moore (Fr., Wellington, Fla.), 6-3, 6-1. In the final match of the flight, Komarraju edged Isabelle Da Silva of Rutgers, 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 10-5, to win the flight.
