ANNAPOLIS, Md. - After hosting an action-packed 2018 Navy Classic this past weekend, the Navy women's basketball team will head out on the road for the first of four straight games away from the friendly-confines of Alumni Hall. First up is a Sunday matchup in Lawrenceville, N.J. versus the Rider University Broncs. The contest between the Mids (2-3) and Broncs (3-4) is set to tip at 2 p.m. at Rider's Alumni Gymnasium. Sunday's contest will be a rematch of last season's 63-44 Navy victory in Annapolis.

Last Time Out
The Mids ended their weekend of action at the 2018 Navy Classic with an emphatic 72-49 victory over North Carolina A&T on Sunday afternoon. The preseason favorites in the MEAC and an NCAA Tournament team from 2017-18, the Aggies led for the opening 5:52 of the game before the Mids overtook the visitors down the stretch of the first quarter and the remaining 34:08 of the contest. A 17-point advantage in the third quarter broke open the 35-26 game at halftime.
After leading 17-12 at the end of the first quarter, Navy's defense continued shutting down A&T as the Mids quickly expanded their five-point lead out to 15 at 27-12 with a 10-0 start to the second period. The Aggies tightened the contest to a 35-26 margin at halftime before the Mids' hot shooting and harassing defense blew the game open in the third quarter. Navy opened the period by shooting 5-7 from the field and turning A&T over nine times. After three quarters, Navy led 60-34.

Sophie Gatzounas, who each tallied 13 points. The duo of Taylor and Gatzounas were also leaders in the Mids' attack on the glass as Taylor recorded 10 rebounds for her second straight double-double, while Gatzounas brought down nine boards.
For the game, Navy outshot North Carolina A&T from the field, 43.5 (27-62) to 28.3 (17-60) percent and 38.9 (7-18) to 18.8 (3-16) from three-point range. The Mids also held an advantage in free throw shooting, 73.3 (11-15) to 54.5 (12-22) percent.

Navy won the rebound battle over the much taller A&T team, 44-40. Taylor and Gatzounas led a team effort that saw 10 players record rebounds and all five starters notch four or more boards. The Mids forced 24 Aggie turnovers and were credited with 17 steals.

Sophie Gatzounas was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 14.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals, while shooting 59.0 (13-22) percent from the field.

Looking Back at Navy-Rider 2017 (Nov. 12)
A strong second quarter gave Navy a double-digit lead over Rider it would not relinquish in an eventual 63-44 victory by the Mids over the Broncs on November 12 at Alumni Hall in Annapolis. The game served as the home opener for Navy, which the Mids won for the sixth year in a row.
Navy broke a tied score midway through the first quarter with an 8-0 run before taking a 19-13 advantage through the first 10 minutes of the game. The Mids broke the game open in the second quarter as they took leads of 25-13 and 33-15 before holding a 41-20 at halftime.
The Mids maintained a lead of at least 17 points in the third quarter and 14 points in the fourth quarter.
Navy ended the game shooting 36.5 percent (23-63) from the field, which included a 6-26 (23.1%) effort from three-point land, and was 11-16 (68.8%) from the foul line. The Mids held Rider to 27.9 percent shooting (17-61) from the floor and a 3-14 (21.4%) showing from three-point land. Rider finished with a 7-11 (63.6%) night from the free throw line.
Navy also held a 50-37 edge over Rider in rebounding.
Sophie Gatzounas notched a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds in 24 minutes of playing time. She was 9-13 (69.2%) from the field and made 2-3 (66.7%) three-point attempts.
