NASHVILLE, Tenn. –– Lipscomb (7-2) post players Rob Marberry and Ahsan Asadullah combined for 20-24 shooting from the field and 50 points to lead the Bisons to a 107-81 victory over the Navy (3-6) men's basketball team Sunday afternoon at Allen Arena in Nashville, Tenn.
"We ran into a team that was very focused," said Navy head coach
Ed DeChellis. "It was their first home game since November 15. They shot the heck out of the ball. Their posts scored 50 points, one of which didn't miss a shot. They are very challenging (for a defense). I thought our defensive rotations, we were a step slow on everything. Credit them (Lipscomb); they just made shot after shot after shot."
Both offenses were clicking in the first half. The Mids connected on 53.8 percent of their shots and the Bisons made 62.1 percent of their field goal attempts in the opening 20 minutes of play.
Navy took an early 13-6 advantage until Lipscomb went on a 12-2 run to take an 18-15 lead. The Bisons soon built a 10-point cushion at 37-27, but the Mids answered with a 7-0 run to close to within 37-34. The margin was four points at 42-38 when an 8-2 run gave Lipscomb a 50-40 lead with two minutes remaining before intermission. The teams went into the locker room with the home team in front 52-45.
Navy shaved two points off of that difference in the early part of the second half (56-51), but Lipscomb opened up a 74-53 lead with 12 minutes still to play.
The margin was at least 18 points over the remainder of the contest.
Navy's shooting cooled off somewhat in the second half as the Mids made just 33.3 percent of their attempts from the floor, but the Bisons shot even better after halftime than they did before it (66.7%). Lipscomb ended the game sinking 64.4 percent of its attempts from the field and Navy compiled a 44 percent performance. The Mids also were 9-23 (39.1%) from three-point range and the Bisons were 10-21 (47.6%) from beyond the arc.
Navy was an impressive 28-29 (96.6%) from the foul line on the afternoon.
"Offensively we were very good tonight," said DeChellis. "We made all but one free throw attempts, we made nine threes and we shared the ball. But defensively we were very bad. As I told the team after the game, we can talk all we want about offense; you scored 81 points, that should be enough to win the game. But you didn't guard on the other end.
"As well as we played defensively Wednesday (at Delaware) and rebounded the ball, tonight we scored with the ball but didn't get enough stops to have an opportunity to win the game. That part is disappointing."
Lipscomb held leads of 54-22 in points scored in the paint and 31-13 in points scored after turnovers. The Bisons became the first team to score at least 100 points in the Mids in 11 seasons
Freshman
John Carter Jr. from nearly Spring Hill, Tenn., led Navy with 17 points. Joining him in double figures were
George Kiernan (Sr., Hinsdale, Ill.) with 15,
Cam Davis (So., Battlefield, Mo.) with 13 and
Josiah Strong (Fr., Brooklyn Park, Minn.) with 11.
The 6-foot, 7-inch Marberry was 10-14 from the field and 6-8 from the foul line in scoring 26 points and the 6-foot, 9-inch Asadullah was a perfect 10-10 from the floor and 4-5 from the charity stripe in scoring 24 points.
Navy will take a break in its competitive schedule for exams and will return to the hardwood for a game Dec. 21 at George Mason.
