PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Another strong day on Saturday kept the Navy swimming teams in first place at the ECAC Championship being held this weekend at Rutgers. With one day remaining in the three-day meet, the Navy women's team holds a 122.5-point advantage on the field and the Navy men's team is in front by 179.5 points.
Saturday's session of finals began with the women's team (1:44.67) placing second to Penn by 39-hundredths of a second in the 200 medley relay while the men posted a time of 1:28.88 to win the race by 1.98 seconds over Emmanuel College.
The depth of the Navy women's team was on display in the 400 individual medley. The Mids qualified four swimmers into the eight-person championship final. Stephanie Downing (So., Pasadena, Md.) was the top Navy finisher as she placed second in a time of 4:25.60. In the men's edition of the event, Micah Oh (Fr., Kent, Ohio) finished in fourth place with a time of 3:56.27.
The 100 butterfly finals saw Madison Floyd (Fr., Oviedo, Fla.) placed eighth (56.88) for the Navy women and Cole Cooper (Fr., Harrisonville, Mo.) finished in third place (48.78) for the Navy men.
Another second-place showing followed for the Navy women when Cagla Brennan (Fr., Waipahu, Hawaii) took the silver medal in the 200 freestyle (1:49.92). Jack Dunworth (Fr., Austin, Texas) was the top Navy men's swimmer in the 200 free as he took seventh place (1:39.68).
Dean Nguyen (Fr., Seattle, Wash.) recorded the lone individual event win of the night for the Navy teams when he posted a time of 54.75 to take the gold medal in the 100 breaststroke by 16-hundredths of a second.
Gus Garies (Sr., Bonner Springs, Kan.) then placed eighth for the Navy women's team in the 100 backstroke (57.29), with Chris Mayer (So., Lakeway, Texas) taking sixth place in the 100 back (49.65) for the Navy men.
The 800 freestyle relays ended Saturday night's competition. The Navy women posted a time of 7:28.04 to win the race by 1.31 seconds over Penn, and the Navy men finished in third place with its time of 6:42.18.
