Navy Swimming Wins ECAC Titles

Feb. 25, 2018

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The Navy swimming teams earned their second conference titles in as many weeks Sunday when the squads swept the team titles at the ECAC Championship in Piscataway, N.J. The women's team totaled 584.5 points to win by 182.5 points and the men posted 656 points to win by 307.5 points.

Navy's diving team did not compete at the meet.

This weekend's effort came one week after the teams won both titles at the Patriot League Championship.

"Overall as a team we go into these championship meets chasing potential," said Navy men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts, who has led the Mids to six-straight ECAC titles. "For the most part, we are very happy with what we did with that. We had lots of best times and that translated into good placements."

"We did a real nice job all weekend long," said Navy women's swimming head coach John Morrison, whose Mids have won back-to-back ECAC championships. "We were better in each evening session than we were in the mornings. That is what you need to have to be successful in three-day meets."

In addition to winning both team titles, Roberts and Morrison also were tabbed as the respective coaches of the year.

Both Navy teams led at the end of both Friday and Saturday, and the programs extended their cushions on Sunday.

The final day of the meet began with the 1650 freestyle timed finals. The highest placing Mid in the women's event was Megan Fields (Fr., Westminster, Md.) with her third-place showing (16:56.31) and Luke Nelson (Jr., Providence, R.I.) was the top Navy men's swimmer with his time of (15:14.10). Nelson had broken the meet record during the afternoon session only to see North Carolina State's Jack McIntyre better Nelson's mark with an effort of 14.47.75.

The 200 backstroke saw Ally Michaels (Fr., Yorkville, Ill.) place fourth (2:02.45) for Navy in the women's championship final and Chris Mayer (So., Lakeway, Texas) finish in fifth place (1:49.08) in the men's championship final.

Next up was the 100 freestyle and it featured Molly Kuenstler (Sr., Villa Park, Ill.) recording a fifth-place finish for the women (51.69) and Andy MacGregor (So., Grand Rapids, Mich.) finishing in sixth place (44.69) for the men.

Harold Choo (Sr., Paramus, N.J.) would place fourth (2:01.91) for the Navy men in the final of the 200 breaststroke, which led into the final individual event of the evening, the 200 butterfly. Isabella Penkwitz (Fr., Sarasota, Fla.) earned a fifth-place finish (2:04.62) and Micah Oh (Fr., Kent, Ohio) posted a fourth-place showing (1:48.97).

The meet concluded with the 400 freestyle relay events. Navy's women's team placed fourth (3:31.41) and the Navy men finished in second place (3:01.03).

"Our senior class of Kuenstler, Alex Holies (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Gus Garies (Bonner Springs, Kan.) really led us all weekend," said Morrison. "The energy they provided the team was key."

"The depth of the team was a big factor in our success," said Roberts. "There are a lot of realty strong individuals and teams at this meet. We needed our depth to come through for us."
