Navy Lets Late Lead Slip Away in Loss to Colgate

Feb. 4, 2018

Box Score

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Colgate (13-10, 8-4 PL) used a late 22-8 run over 8:48 to turn an eight-point deficit (49-41) into a six-point lead (63-57) in a 69-64 win at Navy (15-10, 6-6 PL) on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Hall. Colgate moves into a tie for second place in the Patriot League, while Navy is now tied for fourth.

Navy senior forward Tom Lacey scored a team-high 13 points with nine rebounds and four assists. Senior guard Bryce Dulin scored 12 points, while sophomore center Evan Wieck tallied 10 points with seven rebounds.

Junior point guard Hasan Abdullah returned from a two-game injury absence and scored nine points with three assists. Freshman guard Cam Davis added seven points, while senior guard Shawn Anderson had six points, a career-best nine assists and six rebounds.

Colgate's Jordan Swopshire scored a game-high 16 points with nine rebounds, while Sean O'Brien and Francisco Amiel each scored 12.

Navy outshot Colgate, 49 percent (24-of-49) to 41 percent (20-of-49), and held a 40-22 rebounding margin. However, Navy turned the ball over 15 times, which Colgate turned into 24 points after turnovers.

A 3-pointer by Abdullah cut Colgate's lead to two points at 66-64 with 57 seconds left. However, Swopshire drilled a 3-pointer at the end of the shot clock with 29 seconds left in the game. Navy got off two 3-pointers on the other end, but could not connect.

"We played hard," said Navy head coach Ed DeChellis. "We just didn't play very smart down the stretch. We turned the ball over at crucial times and we didn't make the plays that we needed to make. They made a big shot at the end. It was a tight game, a one-possession game. But we made too many mistakes."

The two teams played a very tight first half with Colgate leading by one at the break (34-33). Colgate had led by seven in the first half after back-to-back 3-pointers by Jordan Robertson and Swopshire, but the Mids chipped away by getting five points from Davis and four from Kiernan during a 14-8 first half-ending run.

Navy took the lead early in the second half at 35-34 when Dulin gathered his own miss and went back up for a layup. The Mids then created separation after Wieck scored inside and Davis followed with a 3-pointer. Both teams struggled from the floor for the next several minutes before an Abdullah 3-pointer and a Lacey and-1 put Navy ahead by eight (47-39) with 10:56 left in the second half.

Colgate then began its comeback and back-to-back 3-pointers by Swopshire and Amiel cut Navy's lead to just one at 54-53 with 6:12 remaining. O'Brien later hit a 3-pointer to give the Raiders a lead they would not relinquish at 58-56 and Amiel made three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt.

Navy cut Colgate's lead to 64-61 with another Lacey three-point play, but after getting a defensive stop, the Mids turned the ball over on its next possession. Lacey was then called for a foul on Will Rayman, who made two free throws for a five-point Colgate lead. Abdullah then made his 3-pointer before Swopshire's critical trey ended the game in Colgate's favor.

Colgate was 19-of-25 at the free throw line (76 percent) and the Raiders made 14 of their last 15 in the game.

Colgate swept the season series against the Mids. The Raiders won the first meeting in Hamilton on January 8, 70-62.

Sunday's game was televised by CBS Sports Network.

Navy will next play at Holy Cross on Wednesday at 7:00 PM.
