WINCHESTER, Mass. - The four-time reigning Patriot League Champion Boston University women's tennis team (3-3, 1-0 PL) defeated visiting Navy (4-3, 0-1 PL), 5-2, on Saturday morning at the Winchester Tennis Center. It was the Patriot League opener for both schools.
Navy opened the day by winning the doubles point, but Boston won five of six singles matches for the 5-2 victory.
Senior Amanda Keller and sophomore Kaylah Hodge blanked Boston's Remi Ramos and Lily Burchell at No. 1 doubles, 6-0. Senior Claudia Mackenzie and sophomore Emily Louie-Meadors then clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win over Iryna Kostirko and Emily Kim at the No. 2 position.
"We did a great job in securing the doubles point," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "I thought we played very committed tennis in the doubles. I liked the intensity we showed, and we maintained it throughout."
With her doubles win with her partner Hodge, Keller moved into sole possession of second place at Navy for career combined singles and doubles wins with 137. She is also now tied for second place in career doubles wins (59) with 2013 graduate Emani Decquir.
Mackenzie was the lone Mid to win a singles match on Saturday. Mackenzie knocked off Sophia Kryloff at the No. 6 singles position, 6-1, 6-1.
Boston won the singles matches on courts 1-5.
"BU showed why they are conference champions," said Puryear. "After the doubles they came out firing and we didn't match their intensity level in the first sets at the first three matches to go on before the other three courts opened up at the club. They were more aggressive and committed to their style of play. In each of the three matches we did a good job to fight back in the second sets but couldn't squeeze out one of the sets. Once the other three went on, we were down one set on all three courts and the momentum of the matches had switched dramatically."
Boston improved to 6-0 all-time against Navy.
"Today was tough loss, but overall it was a very illuminating weekend," said Puryear.
Navy went 2-1 this weekend, having defeated George Washington on Friday, 4-3, and Mount St. Mary's on Saturday, 6-1.
Navy will next host James Madison on Friday, Feb. 9 at 2:00 PM. The Mids will then host Villanova and Towson on Sunday, Feb. 10.
"We must regroup and get ready for another challenging weekend of matches -- with regionally ranked James Madison, and two teams that are always tough in Towson and Villanova."
