Marshall Snaps Navy's Winning Streak

Box Score March 10, 2018

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's tennis team (12-5, 0-1 PL) saw its eight-match winning streak come to a close in a 5-2 loss to visiting Marshall (2-12) on Saturday at the Tose Family Tennis Center. Navy suffered its first loss since Feb. 9.

Marshall won the doubles point, 2-1, and then won four of the six singles matches.

Junior Catalina Rico and freshman Amanda Cyr were the lone Navy pairing to win a doubles match. The duo defeated Brooke Lashway and Ana Marhuenda at the No. 3 doubles position, 6-4.

"In doubles, Cat and Amanda got off to a slow start, but remained persistent and got a break later in the set," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "They then broke serve to win their match. We had chances to put away the doubles at No. 1 and No. 2, serving for it on both courts, but couldn't capitalize, which proved costly."

Rico and Cyr improved to 3-0 in doubles matches this season.

Junior Josie Rogers won a singles match at the No. 5 position over Lashway, 6-0, 6-2, and sophomore Kaylah Hodge bested Marhuenda at the No. 6 singles position, 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 1-0 (10-8).

Rogers improved to 10-8 in singles play this season and Hodge improved to 9-7.

Senior Amanda Keller and sophomore Emily Louie-Meadors lost hard-fought three-set matches at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, respectively.

"While we had good individual efforts in singles, Josie's match stands out and Kaylah had a good comeback, we came up short," said Puryear. "In short, Marshall did a better job of point-to-point play today than we did. The focus now turns to our five matches scheduled during spring break this coming week."

Navy will play five spring matches in Florida from Monday to Wednesday against Northern Iowa, Fairleigh Dickinson, Bryant, Quinnipiac and Swarthmore.
