ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team (16-6) began its spring break trip with a 6-0 loss at Elon (8-5) on Sunday.
The teams played the six singles matches first and, due to the Phoenix clinching the overall decision, did not play the doubles matches. Each of the singles matches were close, with two of them being extended into three sets and another being a straight set match decided in a pair of tiebreakers.
"Elon played a good match to beat us today," said Navy head coach Chris Garner. "Our team competed and played well enough to be in the match, but Elon was better on the big points."
Elon took a 3-0 lead with straight set wins at the Nos. 3, 4 and 5 flights. The Phoenix secured the victory when Felipe Osses-Konig defeated Peter Lohrbach (Fr., Little Neck, N.Y.), 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (7-2) at the No. 6 flight.
Mario Paccini followed with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 win over Andrew Ton (Milpitas, Calif.) at No. 1 singles. The last match on the courts saw Felipe Sarrasague defeat Zach Jennings (So., Snellville, Ga.), 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (11-9), at No. 2 singles.
Navy will play matches Monday at Gardner-Webb (11 a.m.) and Wofford (3 p.m.)
