ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The No. 9 Navy gymnastics team closed its regular season schedule on Saturday with a hotly-contested tri-meet versus No. 7 Michigan and No. 14 William & Mary. After celebrating its senior Class of 2018 prior to the competition, the Mids came out inspired and ready to go versus a talented Big Ten squad in Michigan and their ECAC rival, William & Mary at Macdonough Hall. At the conclusion of the event, the Wolverines edged the Mids, 403.55-399.15. The Tribe finished over 10 points back at 388.1.
Individually, 10 Mids recorded top-five finishes across the six apparatuses. David Toussaint (Fr., Warren, Ohio) and Trevor North (So., Johnstown, Ohio) led the way for Navy as Toussaint won the pommel horse with a score of 13.8 that was 0.25 points clear of second place. North tied a personal best on the parallel bars with a second-place result of 13.65 on Saturday.
"Our guys put together a great performance for Senior Day," remarked head coach Kip Simons. "That is a true testament for the respect that they have for our three seniors. The team brought the fight from start to finish. Today's performance was a glimpse of what we're capable of heading into the postseason."
As a team, Navy posted a 66.1 on the floor exercise, a 64.0 on the pommel horse, a 67.8 on the rings, a 69.15 on the vault, a 64.8 on the parallel bars and a 67.3 on the high bar.
The Mids' top-scoring vault lineup was highlighted by a third-place effort by Tanner West (So., Cypress, Texas) at 14.0 and Frank Bradley (So., McLean, Va.) in fifth at 13.95.
West was also Navy's highest placing gymnast on the rings as he tied for third with Michigan's James Reed at 13.9. Christian Correale (Jr., Harrisburg, Pa.) and Bradley went back-to-back for the Mids in fifth and sixth place with respectively scores of 13.75 and 13.6.
The high bar rotation also saw three Mids finish amongst the top-six. Max Gerber (Fr., Dix Hills, N.Y.), Ben Provost (So., South Hadley, Mass.) and Ryan McVay (Fr., Roseville, Calif.) were closely grouped together with scores of 13.65, 13.6 and 13.6 that placed the trio in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Led by Toussaint's event win, the pommel horse had two Navy gymnasts finish in the top-three. Ryan Orce (So., Gainesville, Fla.) came in third with a score of 13.35.
Toussaint was the only Mid to turn in a top-five result on the floor exercise as he tied for fifth with Michigan's Alec Krystek at 13.6.
North followed a similar script on the parallel bars as he broke up a string of three straight Wolverines in the standings with a score of 13.65 to finish second overall.
"We have the next weekend off which we'll use to put the final touches on our routines," said Simons. "We remain undefeated in conference which is important as we look to cement our ranking for the NCAAs."
Prior to the meet, seniors Vadim Ivanov (Las Vegas, Nev.), Andy Jones (Reading, Mass.) and Noah Beeman (Dayton, Ohio) were recognized by the program for their four years of competition for the Midshipmen. During their careers, the trio has earned six combined All-ECAC and USAG Collegiate All-American honors with each gymnast taking home at least one accolade. The team has also competed at the NCAA Championship Qualifying Meet in 2016, 2017 and are in line for another bid in 2018.
Navy will next be in action in two weeks at the USAG Collegiate Championships at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. The two-day event begins on Friday, March 30 with the team competition before closing on Saturday with the individual finals.
