Men's Tennis Drops League Opener

March 25, 2018

Final Stats

ANNAPOLIS, Md. â€"â€" Boston U. won four of the last five singles matches to finish to rally for a 4-3 victory over the Navy men's tennis team Sunday at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis. The match served as the Patriot League opener for both the Mids (17-9) and the Terriers (8-8).

Navy earned the first point of the match as it won each of the three doubles matches. The Mids posted a 6-3 win at both Nos. 1 and 2 doubles and won a 6-4 decision at the No. 3 flight.

"It was a good start for us by taking the doubles point," said Navy head coach Chris Garner.

The Mids then extended their lead out to 2-0 when Andrew Ton (Fr., Milpitas, Calif.) posted a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Satyajit Simhadri at No. 1 singles.

Navy held a 3-1 lead after Gabriel Pilones (So., Bradenton, Fla.) won a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 decision over Pedro Gutierrez at the No. 4 flight, but the Terriers recorded three-set wins in each of the remaining three matches to post the overall win. That run started when Ethan Kolsy defeated Peter Lohrbach (Fr., Little Neck, N.Y.), 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, at No. 5, continued with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win by David Bogatin over Aries Wong (Sr., Bethesda, Md.) at No. 3 and was capped by Marc Sable defeating Romseh Kahatapitiya (Fr., Virginia Beach, Va.), 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, at No. 6.

"In singles," said Garner, "we got off to a solid start but Boston played and competed well as the match stretched on. Andrew Ton and Gabriel Pilones were bright spots for us in singles to get us to three points.

"In order to be competitive within our league we will need to learn some valuable lessons from this loss."

Navy will play a pair of matches Saturday with the Mids slated to play host to Georgetown at 10 a.m. and continue league play with a noon match at Lafayette.
