3M Augusta Invitational - Final Results
AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Navy men's golf team posted a 54-hole mark of 902 (+38) to place 15th at the 3M Augusta Invitational on Sunday. The two-day event was played at the par 72, 7,005-yard Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia.
The Mids opened the tournament with an 11-over par 299 on Saturday and finished the afternoon with a 17-over par 305 in the second round. Navy closed out the tournament by carding its lowest round with a 10-over par 298.
Sophomore Thomas Garbee (Asheville, N.C.) paced the Mids with a 7-over par 223 (73-76-74) that featured an opening-round 1-over par 73 to tie for 51st. Junior Griffin Peters (Fountain Hills, Ariz.) was just a stroke behind in 58th with an 8-over par 224 (77-76-71). Peters shot the low round of the tournament for the Mids with a 1-under par 71 in Sunday's final round.
Taking 68th was Navy rookie Charlie Musto (Sterling, Va.) with a 15-over par 231 (75-78-78), followed by Thomas Fricke (Haymarket, Va.) in 73rd with a 21-over par 237 (74-88-75) and freshman Ward Wilkinson (Ashland, Va.) in 75th with a 26-over par 242 (84-75-83).
Illinois, ranked 13th by the Golf Coaches Association of America, won the team title at 25-under par 839, 15 strokes ahead of Houston and Wake Forest who tied for second with a 10-under par 854. Meanwhile, only 12 strokes separated the top 31 players in the field. Illinois' Dylan Meyer claimed individual medalist honors by a stroke over Tennessee's Lorenzo Scalise by carding an 11-under par 205 (67-69-69).
Navy returns to action April 13-15 when it splits into two squads, sending a squad to compete at the Clemson Invitational in Salem, S.C., while the Mids will also play host to the annual Navy Spring Invitational.
